From 10th<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 19th<\/span>\u00a0March, schools, community groups and organisations around the UK celebrated science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) as part of <\/strong>British Science Week 2017<\/strong><\/a>. This year, <\/strong>Seven Stories: The National Centre for Children\u2019s Books<\/strong><\/a> took part in British Science Week for the first time \u2013 with a little help from <\/strong>Newcastle University\u2019s Street Scientists<\/strong><\/a>\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

Seven Stories\u2019 mission is to celebrate and share children\u2019s books, and there are some amazing children\u2019s books all about science. From books like Carnovsky and Rachel Williams\u2019 Illuminature,<\/a> where you can discover different animals using a three colour RGB lens, to books like Andrea Beaty and David Roberts\u2019 Rosie Revere, Engineer<\/a>, which comes with engineering activity kits, there are lots of titles which encourage children to think about science and provide STEM role models.<\/p>\n

When I heard that Seven Stories were thinking about taking part in British Science Week, I recommended that they connected up with Newcastle University\u2019s Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering<\/a>. What better way to explore science with our visitors than inviting some real scientists to celebrate with us?<\/p>\n

So on Saturday 11th<\/sup> and Sunday 12th<\/sup> March 2017, the Street Science team took over the Studio at Seven Stories to celebrate British Science Week 2017. The Street Scientists are a group of current students studying STEM subjects at Newcastle University. They bring science to life using ordinary household items – bottles of water, drills, toys\u2026 even toilet seats!<\/p>\n

Street Scientists James, Jenny, Kathryn, Nina, Pete, Jessica, Lysander, Nimarta, Phoebe and Rachel talked to our visitors and showed them lots of fun experiments.
