{"id":382,"date":"2017-07-12T12:19:12","date_gmt":"2017-07-12T11:19:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/?p=382"},"modified":"2017-07-12T14:58:27","modified_gmt":"2017-07-12T13:58:27","slug":"newcastle-university-awards-michael-morpurgo-honorary-degree","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/newcastle-university-awards-michael-morpurgo-honorary-degree\/","title":{"rendered":"Newcastle University awards Michael Morpurgo honorary degree"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Today, <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/\"><strong>Newcastle University<\/strong><\/a><strong> has made\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michaelmorpurgo.com\/\"><strong>Michael Morpurgo<\/strong><\/a><strong> an Honorary Doctor of Letters for his outstanding achievements as a children\u2019s author and supporter of children&#8217;s rights, and recognising his strong connections to the North East.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Michael Morpurgo received the honour as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/elll\/\">School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics\u2019<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/congregations\/ceremonies\/\">Congregation ceremonies,<\/a> where our undergraduates and postgraduates also celebrated their degree success.<\/p>\n<p>Michael is a true champion of children\u2019s books. In an award-winning writing career that has spanned 40 years, he has published over 150 books for children, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michaelmorpurgo.com\/book\/war-horse\/\"><em>War Horse<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michaelmorpurgo.com\/book\/private-peaceful\/\"><em>Private Peaceful<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michaelmorpurgo.com\/book\/kensukes-kingdom\/\"><em>Kensuke\u2019s Kingdom<\/em><\/a>. He was the third <a href=\"http:\/\/www.childrenslaureate.org.uk\/previous-laureates\/michael-morpurgo\/\">Children\u2019s Laureate from 2003 to 2005<\/a>, a scheme he helped to establish. In 2006, his services to children\u2019s literature were recognised when he was awarded an OBE. He is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michaelmorpurgo.com\/patrons-seven-stories\/\">Patron of Seven Stories: The National Centre for Children\u2019s Books<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sevenstories.org.uk\/news\/latestnews\/michaelmorpurgo\">donated his entire archive to Seven Stories in 2015<\/a>. This collection formed the basis for a major exhibition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sevenstories.org.uk\/exhibitions\/michael-morpurgo\">Michael Morpurgo: A Lifetime in Stories,<\/a> as well as a learning and engagement programme, and was supported by an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/innovate-uk\">InnovateUK<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/the-seven-stories-knowledge-transfer-partnership\/\">Knowledge Transfer Partnership with Newcastle University,<\/a> funded by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ahrc.ac.uk\/\">Arts and Humanities Research Council<\/a>. Image: Seven Stories, The National Centre for Children&#8217;s Books, photography by Richard Kenworthy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In her citation, acting University Librarian, Jill Taylor-Roe, said: <em>&#8220;Michael Morpurgo, who we are honouring today, is one of the finest storytellers of our generation.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Michael Morpurgo accepted the award by saying: <em>&#8220;I am delighted to receive this degree from Newcastle University\u2019s School of English. What a huge honour and from a city that is home to the wonderful Seven Stories, who look after my archive and for which my wife Clare and I are joint Patrons.
