{"id":460,"date":"2017-10-26T14:51:49","date_gmt":"2017-10-26T13:51:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/?p=460"},"modified":"2017-10-20T16:53:27","modified_gmt":"2017-10-20T15:53:27","slug":"exploring-marine-sciences-at-seven-stories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/exploring-marine-sciences-at-seven-stories\/","title":{"rendered":"Exploring Marine Sciences at Seven Stories"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In September, visitors to <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sevenstories.org.uk\/\"><strong>Seven Stories: The National Centre for Children\u2019s Books<\/strong><\/a><strong> went \u2018under the sea\u2019 with <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/nes\/research\/marine\/\"><strong>Newcastle University\u2019s Marine Sciences.<\/strong><\/a><strong> We had a whale of a time!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Way back in April, I went on a trip to the coast to meet Annie Russell at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/nes\/about\/facilities\/marinescience\/dove\/#about\">Newcastle University\u2019s Dove Marine Laboratory<\/a> in Cullercoats. I\u2019d heard that Marine Sciences, which is based in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/nes\/\">School of Natural and Environmental Sciences,<\/a> had some really interesting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/nes\/outreach\/marine\/\">outreach and engagement initiatives,<\/a> and I wanted to find out more\u2026<\/p>\n<p>While I was visiting, Annie showed me the creatures that live at Dove Marine, and told me about her work on engaging children and young people through taking marine science activities out to other venues. It struck me that it could be really fascinating to explore this with Seven Stories\u2019 visitors, too.<\/p>\n<p>So, on Saturday 23<sup>rd<\/sup> and Sunday 24<sup>th<\/sup> September 2017, Seven Stories and Marine Sciences collaborated to offer a special \u2018Under the Sea\u2019 themed weekend!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_447\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-447\" style=\"width: 840px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-447 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/files\/2017\/10\/IMG_8732-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Faculty Outreach Officer Charlotte Foster introduces families visiting Seven Stories to different crab species. Image: Newcastle University<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Faculty Outreach Officer Charlotte Foster led a team of students and together they took over Seven Stories\u2019 Studio space. And they brought some amazing marine creatures with them!<\/p>\n<p>Seven Stories\u2019 visitors had the opportunity to see and handle starfish, sea anenomes, crabs and lobsters in designated handling sessions. It was amazing to see these creatures up close and learn about their behaviours and habitats. Image: Newcastle University<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Students from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/sage\/schoolscollegesandoutreach\/#streetscience\">Street Science<\/a> team supported the handling sessions, origami and colouring in crafts, and an activity station all about marine conservation.<\/p>\n<p>And Seven Stories\u2019 staff got involved as well! So friendly and approachable. The craft was great and well received, as well as the actual creatures, of course. Image: Newcastle University<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Charlotte said: <em>&#8220;Staff and students from Newcastle University&#8217;s Dove Marine Laboratory had a wonderful time introducing sea creatures at the Seven Stories &#8216;Under the sea&#8217; event. It was a fantastic setting and Seven Stories were incredibly supportive (some even joined in holding a starfish or two!)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The weekend was a great opportunity for the next generation to learn about our amazing oceans.
