{"id":51,"date":"2016-09-30T11:23:12","date_gmt":"2016-09-30T10:23:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/?p=51"},"modified":"2016-09-30T11:23:12","modified_gmt":"2016-09-30T10:23:12","slug":"bugs-bugs-bugs-with-professor-michelle-martin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/bugs-bugs-bugs-with-professor-michelle-martin\/","title":{"rendered":"Bugs, bugs, bugs with Professor Michelle Martin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/elll\/\">Newcastle University&#8217;s School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sevenstories.org.uk\/\">Seven Stories, the National Centre for Children&#8217;s Books<\/a> were delighted to welcome <a href=\"https:\/\/ischool.uw.edu\/feature-stories\/cleary-professor-michelle-martin-crusader-diversity-childrens-books\">Professor Michelle Martin, Beverly Cleary Endowed Professor<\/a> in Children and Youth Services from the University of Washington.<\/p>\n<p>Newcastle was Michelle&#8217;s last stop on a quick trip around the UK, so we were really pleased she managed to fit in a\u00a0research\u00a0day at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sevenstories.org.uk\/collection\">Seven Stories&#8217; Collections<\/a>, a visit to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sevenstories.org.uk\/exhibitions\">Seven Stories&#8217;\u00a0exhibitions<\/a>, and last night&#8217;s free public event: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sevenstories.org.uk\/whats-on\/events\/122887\/bug-eyes-bird-brains-and-bat-wings-read-a-rama%C2%AE-brings-nature-to-life\">Bug Eyes, Bird Brains and Bat Wings: Read-a-Rama Brings Nature to Life!<\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_54\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54\" style=\"width: 840px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-54\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/files\/2016\/09\/MG_7822-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Michelle Martin event at Seven Stories\" width=\"840\" height=\"560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/files\/2016\/09\/MG_7822-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/files\/2016\/09\/MG_7822-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/files\/2016\/09\/MG_7822-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/files\/2016\/09\/MG_7822-1200x800.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-54\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: Newcastle University<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Now, when I think of typical academic events, I think of lectures, Q&amp;As, panel discussions&#8230; this was far from it.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside her academic work in the field of children&#8217;s literature, Michelle is a Gold Award Girl Scout and works with her students on her literacy immersion programme for children,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/read-a-rama.org\/\">Read-a-Rama,<\/a>\u00a0which was the focus of our workshop.<\/p>\n<p>Michelle&#8217;s Read-a-Rama programme\u00a0uses children&#8217;s books as a starting point for activities which engage all the senses.\u00a0The mantras of Read-a-Rama<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>are \u201c100% engagement 100% of the time\u201d and \u201cDead time will kill your program\u201d &#8211; and our evening with Michelle certainly lived up to that!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_59\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59\" style=\"width: 840px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-59\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/files\/2016\/09\/IMG_7834_cropped-1024x698.jpg\" alt=\"Michelle Martin event at Seven Stories\" width=\"840\" height=\"573\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/files\/2016\/09\/IMG_7834_cropped-1024x698.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/files\/2016\/09\/IMG_7834_cropped-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/files\/2016\/09\/IMG_7834_cropped-768x524.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/files\/2016\/09\/IMG_7834_cropped-1200x819.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-59\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: Newcastle University<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We sang action songs, learnt sign language\u00a0and had a go at some\u00a0simulation games. We played being rabbits and foxes, embraced our inner moths and used our sense of smell. We even learnt origami to create our own\u00a0&#8216;Not a Boxes&#8217; from Antoinette Portis&#8217; book.<\/p>\n<p>As a former Brownie leader, I certainly learnt a lot and really enjoyed the evening.
