In this blog post, find out about an alphabet schools project led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/library\/services\/education-outreach\/\">Newcastle University Library\u2019s Outreach team,<\/a> who collaborated with <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.historicengland.org.uk\/\"><strong>Historic England,<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sevenstories.org.uk\/\"><strong>Seven Stories: The National Centre for Children\u2019s Books<\/strong><\/a><strong> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/hattongallery.org.uk\/\">Hatton Gallery<\/a>\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Inspired by hearing about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mancunianmatters.co.uk\/content\/240375697-school-kids-give-manchesters-alphabet-revamp-discover-sense-pride-home-city\">&#8216;A Manchester Alphabet&#8217; project,<\/a> where 8 primary schools in the North West created their own heritage alphabets, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/library\/\">Newcastle University Library<\/a> led a project with nine classes of Year 5 children, who researched, wrote and illustrated their own alphabet books exploring their local heritage.<\/p>\n<p>Newcastle University&#8217;s Special Collections Education Outreach Officer Gillian Johnston led the project, which formed part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.historicengland.org.uk\/services-skills\/education\/heritage-schools\/\">Historic England&#8217;s Heritage Schools programme,<\/a> and 240 children from five local schools took part.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_452\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-452\" style=\"width: 840px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-452\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/files\/2017\/10\/IMG_8673-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Newcastle University's Special Collections, including Old Aunt Elspa's ABC. Image: Newcastle University<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For Gillian, the starting point for the project was <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/speccoll\/2017\/12\/14\/crawhalls-old-aunt-elspas-abc\/\">Old Aunt Elspa\u2019s ABC,<\/a> an alphabet book with woodblock printed letters and associated images by Joseph Crawhall II, held in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/library\/special-collections\/\">the University\u2019s Special Collections.<\/a> The University Library also holds early hornbooks, and there are a number of alphabet books within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/library\/special-collections\/collections\/collection_details.php?id=155\">Booktrust collection.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gillian got in touch with Paula Wride, Seven Stories\u2019 Collections Officer, to find out about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sevenstories.org.uk\/collection#filter=.kw-13\">alphabet books in their Collection.<\/a> Alongside the extensive Pat Garrett \u2018ABC books\u2019 collection, Seven Stories hold original archives for books including Judy Brook\u2019s <em>Mrs Noah\u2019s ABC 123,<\/em> Robert Crowther\u2019s pop-up <em>Most Amazing Hide and Seek Alphabet Book<\/em> and Beverley Naidoo and Prodeepta Das\u2019 <em>S is for South Africa<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>These collections were displayed during a CPD course which was attended by primary school teachers from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/barleymowprimary.org\/\">Barley Mow Primary School,<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bridgewater.newcastle.sch.uk\/\">Bridgewater Primary School,<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/bykerprimary.org\/\">Byker Primary School,<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stjohns.newcastle.sch.uk\/website\">St John\u2019s Primary School,<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.walkergate.newcastle.sch.uk\/website\">Walkergate Community School.<\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_456\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-456\" style=\"width: 840px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-456\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/files\/2017\/10\/IMG_8692-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Teachers exploring Seven Stories' alphabet books with Collections Officer Paula Wride. Image: Newcastle University<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Over the course of the CPD day, the teachers explored the alphabet book collections, and went on a heritage walk around central Newcastle to find out about the history of the area. They explored different artistic techniques for illustrating their alphabets with the Hatton Gallery\u2019s Education team and tried out creative and non-fiction writing styles.<\/p>\n<p>Next, the teachers used this framework and additional support provided in school by the University Library to develop their project, and engaged each class with creating their own heritage alphabets.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the children\u2019s artwork and writing was professionally collated by Michael Sharp from the University Library\u2019s Special Collections team to make a series of beautiful alphabet books. One of the teachers who participated said: <em>\u201cWe are proud to be a Heritage School.\u00a0 It has given children an amazing sense of pride seeing their book in print.\u00a0 Each child has gained new experiences through heritage walks, walks around the immediate school area, a bridges walk along the Tyne as well as working with the Hatton Gallery artist.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And the young people loved it too! Historic England\u2019s Victoria Angel said: <em>\u201cThe books are absolutely fantastic \u2013 they\u2019re wonderful. It was great to see how inspired the schools&#8217; senior leadership teams were by them! The children really saw that the books reflected their area, and their poetry, artwork, prose, research and independent learning is clearly demonstrated in the books.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Evaluating the project, we reflected on what an interesting collaboration this has been \u2013 and we\u2019re hoping it will lead to additional partnership work in the future.
