Including &#8211; next week &#8211; a free evening event with none other than the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booktrust.org.uk\/what-we-do\/childrens-laureate\/\">Children&#8217;s Laureate,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booktrust.org.uk\/what-we-do\/childrens-laureate\/lauren-child-biography\/\">Lauren Child!<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What do you think about, when you think about nothing? That&#8217;s the question posed by Lauren Child MBE, the UK&#8217;s Children&#8217;s Laureate, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booktrust.org.uk\/news-and-features\/features\/2017\/october\/booktrust-annual-lecture-2017-and-bookstart-25th-anniversary-celebrations-relive-the-evening-in-pictures\/\">last year&#8217;s BookTrust annual lecture.<\/a> Seven Stories&#8217; staff and Newcastle University students and academics attended this event &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/childrensliteratureinnewcastle\/what-do-you-think-about-when-you-think-about-nothing\/\">you can read a review by Agn\u00e8s Guyon on the Children&#8217;s Literature in Newcastle blog<\/a> &#8211; and we just had to invite Lauren to Newcastle to share her views about creativity and education with us.<\/p>\n<p>Lauren is an award-winning artist and writer. She&#8217;s the creator of much-loved characters including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/cbeebies\/shows\/charlie-and-lola\">Charlie and Lola,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booktrust.org.uk\/book\/c\/clarice-bean-thats-me\/\">Clarice Bean,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguin.co.uk\/books\/182\/182336\/hubert-horatio\/9780141339832.html\">Hubert Horatio<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rubyredfort.com\/\">Ruby Redfort<\/a>. And in 2017, she became Children&#8217;s Laureate, recognising her innovative work in raising the profile of illustration as an artform, her role in translating books into other media, and her advocacy for visual literacy and creativity.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-703\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/files\/2018\/10\/lauren-child-laureate-quote-dreamimagine-16x9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"498\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/files\/2018\/10\/lauren-child-laureate-quote-dreamimagine-16x9.jpg 498w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/files\/2018\/10\/lauren-child-laureate-quote-dreamimagine-16x9-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 498px) 85vw, 498px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The UK Children&#8217;s Laureate role is sponsored by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waterstones.com\/\">Waterstones<\/a> and co-ordinated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booktrust.org.uk\/\">BookTrust,<\/a> and recognises <em>&#8216;an eminent writer or illustrator of children&#8217;s books to celebrate outstanding achievement in their field&#8217;<\/em>. It was established in 1999, and recent Laureates have included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booktrust.org.uk\/what-we-do\/childrens-laureate\/former-laureates\/chris-riddell\/\">Chris Riddell,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booktrust.org.uk\/what-we-do\/childrens-laureate\/former-laureates\/malorie-blackman\/\">Malorie Blackman<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booktrust.org.uk\/what-we-do\/childrens-laureate\/former-laureates\/julia-donaldson\/\">Julia Donaldson<\/a>.
