{"id":708,"date":"2018-11-01T15:40:32","date_gmt":"2018-11-01T15:40:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/?p=708"},"modified":"2018-11-01T15:40:32","modified_gmt":"2018-11-01T15:40:32","slug":"from-the-source-to-the-sea-being-human-festival-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/from-the-source-to-the-sea-being-human-festival-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"From the Source to the Sea: Being Human Festival 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>This November, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/\">Newcastle University<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sevenstories.org.uk\/\">Seven Stories: The National Centre for Children&#8217;s Books<\/a> are busy preparing for an amazing programme of free events as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/beinghumanfestival.org\/events\/\">Being Human Festival 2018.<\/a> Find out more in this blog post&#8230;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/being-part-of-being-human-2016\/\">Two years ago,<\/a> we dipped our toes in the waters of the <a href=\"https:\/\/beinghumanfestival.org\/\">Being Human Festival, a national festival of the humanities.<\/a> And this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/nuhri\/\">Newcastle University&#8217;s Humanities Research Institute<\/a> is one of the national festival hubs! So, I&#8217;m currently immersed in planning five events in partnership with Seven Stories&#8230; all inspired by <a href=\"https:\/\/beinghumanfestival.org\/from-the-source-to-the-sea-newcastle-university-hub\/\">our hub&#8217;s theme, <em>From the Source to the Sea!<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On Saturday 17th November, there are two opportunities for all the family to explore the rivers, seas and oceans in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sevenstories.org.uk\/collection\">Seven Stories Collection<\/a> in a special hands-on experience,<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sevenstories.org.uk\/whats-on\/events\/123798\/once-upon-a-tyne\">Once Upon a Tyne.<\/a><\/em> Led by staff and research postgraduates from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/elll\/research\/literature\/childrens\/#overview\">Newcastle University&#8217;s Children&#8217;s Literature Unit<\/a> and the Seven Stories Collection team, see original manuscripts by <a href=\"http:\/\/collection.sevenstories.org.uk\/Dserve\/Dserve.exe?dsqIni=dserve.ini&amp;dsqApp=Archive&amp;dsqCmd=Show.tcl&amp;dsqDb=Catalog&amp;dsqPos=0&amp;dsqSearch=(RefNo='rw*')\">Robert Westall,<\/a> and illustrations by <a href=\"http:\/\/collection.sevenstories.org.uk\/Dserve\/Dserve.exe?dsqIni=dserve.ini&amp;dsqApp=Archive&amp;dsqCmd=Show.tcl&amp;dsqDb=Catalog&amp;dsqPos=0&amp;dsqSearch=(RefNo='jk*')\">Judith Kerr<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/collection.sevenstories.org.uk\/Dserve\/Dserve.exe?dsqIni=dserve.ini&amp;dsqApp=Archive&amp;dsqCmd=Show.tcl&amp;dsqDb=Catalog&amp;dsqPos=0&amp;dsqSearch=(RefNo='pod*')\">Polly Dunbar&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_713\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-713\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-713\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/files\/2018\/11\/729.jpg\" alt=\"David Almond's notebooks, on display in the Where Your Wings Were exhibition. Image: Seven Stories, The National Centre for Children&#8217;s Books<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Later that afternoon, join author and Lecturer in Creative Writing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/elll\/staff\/profile\/anncoburn.html#background\">Ann Coburn,<\/a> for our creative writing workshop for adults, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sevenstories.org.uk\/whats-on\/events\/123784\/undiscovered-land-write-like-david-almond\"><em>Undiscovered Land: Write Like David Almond.<\/em><\/a> Start your own story incorporating elements of memory, history, magic and transformation. Photograph by Georgia Claire<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And that&#8217;s not all: there are lots of other fascinating events as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/nuhri\/events\/\">Newcastle University&#8217;s Being Human Festival hub<\/a> &#8211; from foodbank histories, to quantum tunnelling&#8230; and from the source to the sea!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Being Human is the UK\u2019s only national festival of the humanities and took place this year between 15<sup>th<\/sup> \u2013 24<sup>th<\/sup> November 2018.
