{"id":77,"date":"2016-10-14T15:50:33","date_gmt":"2016-10-14T14:50:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/?p=77"},"modified":"2016-10-25T15:59:05","modified_gmt":"2016-10-25T14:59:05","slug":"apply-for-the-seven-stories-northern-bridge-partnership-phd-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/apply-for-the-seven-stories-northern-bridge-partnership-phd-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Apply for the Seven Stories Northern Bridge Partnership PhD Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This autumn, we\u2019re delighted to offer a new fully-funded PhD opportunity: the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northernbridge.ac.uk\/studentships\/apply\/\">Seven Stories Northern Bridge Partnership Award!<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.northernbridge.ac.uk\/\">Northern Bridge<\/a>\u00a0is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ahrc.ac.uk\/\">AHRC-funded<\/a>\u00a0Doctoral Training Partnership between <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.ac.uk\/\">Newcastle University<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dur.ac.uk\/\">Durham University<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qub.ac.uk\/\">Queen\u2019s University Belfast<\/a>. Northern Bridge offers funded PhD studentships, with support for placements and training, to outstanding applicants through a competitive scheme.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sevenstories.org.uk\/\">Seven Stories: The National Centre for Children\u2019s Books<\/a>\u00a0is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northernbridge.ac.uk\/partners\/\">Strategic Partner<\/a>\u00a0to Northern Bridge. When Northern Bridge suggested that we could issue a targeted Partnership Award call in this year\u2019s application round, we jumped at the chance\u2026<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What are the benefits?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>For applicants:<\/strong> well, for starters, it\u2019s a fully-funded PhD opportunity and Northern Bridge\u2019s focus on academic excellence means that these studentships are very highly regarded.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll have the opportunity to study <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sevenstories.org.uk\/collection\">Seven Stories&#8217; amazing children\u2019s literature collection<\/a> in depth through your PhD research. This could also lead to placement opportunities with us through Northern Bridge: perhaps your work will feed into a Seven Stories exhibition, or you could help us with collection management tasks, or maybe you could deliver a public event?<\/p>\n<p><strong>For Seven Stories: <\/strong>Seven Stories encourage research on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sevenstories.org.uk\/collection\">our collection<\/a>. Academic research really helps to unlock the archive and we love the new ideas that researchers come up with.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For Northern Bridge: <\/strong>By launching the Partnership Awards this year, Northern Bridge are exploring a new way of involving Strategic Partners within the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ahrc.ac.uk\/skills\/phdstudents\/fundingandtraining\/dtps\/\">Doctoral Training Partnerships<\/a> \u2013 and we\u2019re excited to be trailblazing with them!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_79\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79\" style=\"width: 746px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-79 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/files\/2016\/10\/7S_Collections_Damien_Wootten-746x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Collections. Photography by Damien Wootten.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h5><strong>So how will it work? <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>Step 1: <\/strong>Working with Northern Bridge, Seven Stories have developed a call for applications for the Partnership Award. We&#8217;re particularly interested in receiving applications in\u00a0the following areas:\u00a0<em>Makers of children\u2019s literature: children\u2019s book history 1750-2000,\u00a0New adults: the growth of teenage literature,<\/em> and <em>Children on stage: twentieth century children\u2019s theatre.\u00a0<\/em>But if you want to look at Seven Stories&#8217;\u00a0collections from another angle, we&#8217;d still be very interested in hearing from you.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.northernbridge.ac.uk\/studentships\/pa\/\">Take a look\u2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2:<\/strong> The application period is now live! Students who are planning to apply for the Seven Stories Partnership Award are encouraged to outline their proposed research project and email this with a CV to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:sarah.rylance@ncl.ac.uk\">sarah.rylance@ncl.ac.uk<\/a>\u00a0to register their interest by\u00a018 November\u00a02016.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3:<\/strong> Next, students will work with Seven Stories and their proposed academic supervisor to develop their research proposals. Newcastle University will also be holding a <a href=\"http:\/\/forms.ncl.ac.uk\/view.php?id=11027\">Children&#8217;s Literature Unit Postgraduate Open Day\u00a0on 3\u00a0November<\/a> where you can discuss your application!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 4:<\/strong> The completed applications will go into the 2017 Northern Bridge Studentship competition and will be assessed alongside all other Northern Bridge submissions.
