{"id":86,"date":"2016-10-26T10:23:05","date_gmt":"2016-10-26T09:23:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/?p=86"},"modified":"2017-12-13T15:02:19","modified_gmt":"2017-12-13T15:02:19","slug":"building-a-new-city-with-newcastle-city-futures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/building-a-new-city-with-newcastle-city-futures\/","title":{"rendered":"Building a new city with Newcastle City Futures"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>What will Newcastle and Seven Stories look like in 2065?<\/h5>\n<p><strong>This October, <a href=\"http:\/\/newcastlecityfutures.org\/\">Newcastle City Futures<\/a> took over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sevenstories.org.uk\/\">Seven Stories, the National Centre for Children&#8217;s Books<\/a> for a weekend of <a href=\"http:\/\/thebigdraw.org\/\">Big Draw Festival<\/a> activities which encouraged children and families to design and build their future city\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over 500\u00a0people visited\u00a0Seven Stories over the course of our Big Draw weekend. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebigdraw.org\/the-big-draw-2016-festival-theme\">2016&#8217;s STEAM Powered Big Draw Festival<\/a> aims to inspire\u00a0illustrators everywhere to explore\u00a0creative innovation, enterprise, digital technologies and the arts through drawing.<\/p>\n<p>This seemed like\u00a0a perfect theme for Seven Stories to\u00a0connect with the <a href=\"http:\/\/newcastlecityfutures.org\/ULP.html\">Newcastle City Futures Urban Living Partnership<\/a>, a\u00a0project led by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/guru\/staff\/profile\/marktewdwr-jones.html#background\">Professor Mark Tewdwr-Jones<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/\">Newcastle University<\/a>.\u00a0Newcastle City Futures\u00a0aims to get people and organisations\u00a0in Newcastle Gateshead talking and thinking about the future needs of the city, and working together to foster innovation.<\/p>\n<p>Now,\u00a0I think the views\u00a0of the\u00a0children and families visiting Seven Stories\u00a0are\u00a0pretty important here. After all, they&#8217;re the ones who&#8217;ll be living and working in\u00a0Newcastle in fifty years&#8217; time!<\/p>\n<p>So what will Newcastle and Seven Stories look like in 2065? Image: Newcastle University<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Over the course of the weekend, children and families added to our large map of Newcastle and Gateshead to create their vision of Newcastle in 2065.<\/p>\n<p>And their creativity was amazing! Visitors built homes, cultural, sports and science\u00a0venues, businesses, hotels,\u00a0transport systems, power stations and\u00a0several bridges.\u00a0In fact, the children organically\u00a0created pretty much everything you&#8217;d need in a future city.<\/p>\n<p>I was pleased to see they thought the Angel of the North would still be there, and Seven Stories too!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5>The house of the future&#8230;?<\/h5>\n<figure id=\"attachment_96\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96\" style=\"width: 730px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-96\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/vitalnorth\/files\/2016\/10\/IMG20161009153055_edited-730x1024.jpg\" alt=\"The house of the future. Perhaps that houses in the future will be more colourful and\u00a0allow for personalisation. We looked at the streets of Newcastle in 3D and then participants designed a new Northumberland Street using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sketchup.com\/\">SketchUp<\/a>. Image: Newcastle University.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/openlab.ncl.ac.uk\/people\/a7231984\/\">Zander Wilson<\/a> of Open Lab at Newcastle University provided a fun jigsaw activity. The children coloured in wooden RFID enabled jigsaw pieces, before recording a message about their hopes for the future of the city. Throughout the weekend, children could draw a new blueprint for our galleries, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/apl\/staff\/profile\/teresastrachan.html\">Teresa Strachan<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/apl\/2016\/07\/04\/yes-planning-with-young-people\/\">YES Planning students<\/a> at Newcastle University came to deliver a drop-in workshop all about urban planning.
