Our testing was completed a few months after go live, last October.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, as part of the final stages of the PG website project, there has been a <strong>range<\/strong> of <strong>extensive evaluations\u00a0<\/strong>run and co-ordinated by the Postgraduate Marketing Team.<\/p>\n<p>From clarity tests of the content, use of Google Analytics, interviews, remote user testing by our PG target audience &#8211; even an externally-run expert review.<\/p>\n<p>There was also a chance to review the new website against our competitors &#8211; well it would be rude not to\u2026and anyway we had a<strong> clear content strategy<\/strong> to test:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe new Postgraduate website will have audience driven, engaging content that inspires ambitious high-flying global students to make us their confident choice for PG study\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Headline results<\/h2>\n<p>Overall \u2013 the new website has <strong>performed excellently,<\/strong> with some <strong>outstanding feedback<\/strong> alongside some further ideas for development.<\/p>\n<p>Which is great, since the PG website project has paved the way for all our <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/2015\/03\/06\/introduction-to-go-mobile\/\">Go Mobile <\/a>work!<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to note once a website has been launched and tested \u2013 that\u2019s not the end. Actually it\u2019s just the beginning; of making further improvements, developments, finding solutions to issues and continually trying to do the best thing for our users.<\/p>\n<p>Read on to find out how we did&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2>First impressions<\/h2>\n<p>The word cloud below shows first impressions of the PG site. The most popular words that users used to describe the site included: easy, modern, simple, clear, professional, clean and cool.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2015\/09\/user-testing-first-impressions2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1059\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2015\/09\/user-testing-first-impressions2-300x282.jpg\" alt=\" Word cloud showing first impressions of the PG website\" width=\"300\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2015\/09\/user-testing-first-impressions2-300x282.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2015\/09\/user-testing-first-impressions2-319x300.jpg 319w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2015\/09\/user-testing-first-impressions2.jpg 476w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Website content<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cEverything is very clear, the words actually stand out because the design of the site is very lean and clean cut\u2026There are no useless pieces of information.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;padding-left: 330px\">User tester<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ranked 1st or 2nd<\/strong> in comparison <strong>to competitor PG content\u00a0<\/strong>according to Clarity Grader, a\u00a0website content analysis tool<\/li>\n<li>An<strong>\u00a0improvement<\/strong> in <strong>quality and consistency<\/strong> of content<\/li>\n<li>Users found the content clear, detailed, straightforward and organised and with <strong>good comprehension<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Test participants commented on the quality of course entries they found. Users specifically found the following useful:\n<ul>\n<li>modules<\/li>\n<li>course delivery and duration<\/li>\n<li>facilities<\/li>\n<li>employment infographics and related courses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>some future developments<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>New content quality and consistency measures are being developed<\/li>\n<li>Continued focus on the use of terminology, ensuring the content is accessible by our key audiences<\/li>\n<li>Further development of supplementary information, scheduled by a web editorial calendar<\/li>\n<li>Develop stronger links between supplementary information and course information<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Design<\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">&#8220;Wow, this one&#8217;s layout is different, I like it, it&#8217;s colourful, it&#8217;s not boring&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;padding-left: 330px\"><em>User tester<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>The design was <strong>well received in all testing<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Gives a <strong>great first impression<\/strong> to users<\/li>\n<li>Newcastle <strong>compares favourably<\/strong> in comparison to our <strong>competitors<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>some future developments<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>User experience testing helped to influence our Go Mobile template design<\/li>\n<li>Further development of the PG homepage and the flow of information<\/li>\n<li>Developments to the course search call to action and visibility on the homepage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Course search\/funding search<\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u201cThis is amazing. I came here the last time and I don\u2019t believe I could find things so easily. This actually shows that the website has improved and this is actually a very good filtering that the website has added to its system\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;padding-left: 330px\"><em>User tester<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Newcastle\u2019s <strong>content performed well<\/strong> <strong>in comparison to competitor sites. <\/strong>One user stated they \u201cstrongly favoured the course navigation and content over Manchester\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>New course search<\/strong> was <strong>well received<\/strong> and proved to be the most used method of finding a course in comparison to the A-Z list<\/li>\n<li>The advanced search filters are being well used<\/li>\n<li>Tab layout of the course information on desktop was well received<\/li>\n<li>The new step-by-step guide was well received and recognised as providing useful information<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Some future developments<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Further development of search filters to ensure accurate and precise results<\/li>\n<li>Development of additional tools to sort search results, eg by relevance, A-Z<\/li>\n<li>Streamlining of the course and funding search functionality across all devices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Calls to action<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Good to have <strong>recognisable calls to action<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Footer calls to action are used well<\/li>\n<li>Improvement in number of sessions resulting in the creation of a new (applicant) account<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Some future developments<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Renaming of some calls to action for consistency<\/li>\n<li>Revising of placement of some calls to action<\/li>\n<li>More visible course start dates and application deadline where they exist<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Navigation<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Users reported on the <strong>ease of navigation<\/strong> through the website<\/li>\n<li>Use of tabs on course profile pages are well received on desktop<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>some future developments<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Development of mobile menus: main menu; secondary menu; and tabbed menus<\/li>\n<li>Consistent application of hyperlinks \u2013 already addressed as part of ongoing development<\/li>\n<li>Review of the breadcrumbs design and functionality<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>So, has the new PG website been a measurable success? I would argue <strong>a resounding YES!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All the testing, evaluation and competitor analysis shows this is largely the case. Phew.<\/p>\n<p>Back to the original plan then:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe new Postgraduate website will have audience driven, engaging content that inspires ambitious high-flying global students to make us their confident choice for PG study\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Audience driven \u2013 Check.<\/strong> All content has been created, developed and designed with the user\u2019s needs in mind.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Engaging content \u2013 Check.<\/strong> We\u2019ve used new technology and design to enhance the user experience where appropriate; a mobile responsive design, new course search, infographics and videos to supplement course pages.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ambitious high-flying global students \u2013 Time will tell<\/strong>. It&#8217;s hard to test or measure whether applicants are deciding to apply due to our marvellous new website.
