Lisa and I attended the latest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nngroup.com\/training\/\">Nielsen Normal Group (NNG) <\/a>training on Content Strategy to pick up even more pointers.<\/p>\n<p>We weren&#8217;t disappointed. It was a really inspiring and practical course, full of great ideas for techniques to help with content creation, and client buy-in.<\/p>\n<p>We came back fired-up with loads of ideas to <strong>improve our processes<\/strong> and <strong>firm up our strategy<\/strong> \u2013 I left with a long \u2018to do list\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>And the even better news? Turns out that by following the guidance from NNG and other experts in content strategy, we\u2019ve done a fantastic job at the University, and we can take <strong>pride in what we have achieved so far.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Approval from the experts<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Affirmation<\/strong> from a room-full of <strong>content professionals<\/strong> that the work we are doing is; absolutely the right thing to do to improve our websites, pretty advanced and even admired \u2013 followed by requests to share our best practice with others\u2026well, wow!<\/p>\n<p>It sure felt like a <strong>pat on the back from our peers<\/strong> that understand what we are trying to achieve, and a <strong>real boost<\/strong> to the team just when we needed it.<\/p>\n<h2>Top five tasks on our content strategy \u2018to do list\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>So, on to our to do list, here\u2019s just the top 5\u2026<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>We\u2019ve created a really good <strong>content strategy<\/strong> for Postgraduate \u2013 now we need one for the <strong>rest of the University<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Apply content strategy to our content strategy \u2013 pull out the <strong>top five principles<\/strong> and use them everywhere as keywords in our communications<\/li>\n<li>Create a University-wide <strong>tone of voice<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Use the results of our content audits in a <strong>more visual<\/strong> way to help colleagues see the <strong>benefits of our work,<\/strong> and the improvements made to usability, readability, accessibility etc<\/li>\n<li>Share <strong>Google\u2019s<\/strong> outline about how to get good search results &#8211; and how we already do this in our <strong>content guidelines<\/strong>, and the <strong>training<\/strong> we deliver<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Discover for yourself<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re interested in where we got our content strategy <strong>inspiration<\/strong> from \u2013 and more importantly why content strategy is <strong>so important for websites<\/strong> \u2013 there is a wealth of guidance available.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d recommend <a href=\"http:\/\/contentstrategy.com\/\">\u2018Content Strategy for the Web\u2019<\/a> by Kristina Halvorson and Melissa Rach.
