Like the other sites going through Go Mobile it is managed in T4, the University&#8217;s content management system.<\/p>\n<h2>Features of the homepage<\/h2>\n<p>Our new homepage can be broken down into eight distinct sections.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Global menu<\/strong> for quick access to key links<\/li>\n<li><strong>Course finder<\/strong> for direct access to Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hero image slider<\/strong> to highlight key news, event and research stories<\/li>\n<li><strong>Video content<\/strong> to support our key messages<\/li>\n<li><strong>Seasonal message<\/strong> top task boxes<\/li>\n<li><strong>Latest news<\/strong> from the Press Office<\/li>\n<li><strong>Partner logos and awards<\/strong> carousel<\/li>\n<li><strong>Social media links<\/strong> and directory<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div id=\"attachment_1470\" style=\"width: 594px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/01\/hp-desktop.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1470\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1470\" class=\"wp-image-1470 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/01\/hp-desktop-1024x994.jpg\" alt=\"Newcastle University homepage features and layout\" width=\"584\" height=\"567\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/01\/hp-desktop-1024x994.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/01\/hp-desktop-300x291.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/01\/hp-desktop-768x746.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/01\/hp-desktop-309x300.jpg 309w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/01\/hp-desktop.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1470\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Homepage design features and desktop layout<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On mobile devices these stack horizontally, one on top of the other.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll look at a couple of these features in more detail.<\/p>\n<h2>Hero image slider<\/h2>\n<p>The old homepage image slider was full width. Although this created a strong visual impact, sourcing images to fit this area could be problematic.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1469\" style=\"width: 987px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/01\/hero-slider-old.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1469\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1469\" class=\"wp-image-1469 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/01\/hero-slider-old.jpg\" alt=\"Old full-width hero image slider\" width=\"977\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/01\/hero-slider-old.jpg 977w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/01\/hero-slider-old-300x92.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/01\/hero-slider-old-768x236.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/01\/hero-slider-old-500x154.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 977px) 100vw, 977px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1469\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Old full-width hero image slider<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The new hero image slider is smaller. It allows the Press team to source images that would fit a standard landscape 4 x 6 photo.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/01\/hero-slider-desktop.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1467\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1467\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/01\/hero-slider-desktop.jpg\" alt=\"New hero image slider\" width=\"716\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/01\/hero-slider-desktop.jpg 716w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/01\/hero-slider-desktop-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/01\/hero-slider-desktop-462x300.jpg 462w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 716px) 100vw, 716px\" \/><\/a>On mobile devices the caption drops below the image to avoid the image from being fully covered. The caption and image form a single clickable link. This is important on mobile devices as it creates a large hit target to increase successful touch interactions.<\/p>\n<h2>Video content<\/h2>\n<p>The new homepage layout has allowed the use of rich media content such as video. The analytics show that <strong>the external homepage is the most popular destination for video consumption<\/strong>.
