I\u2019m here to share with you what that involves and how it informs everything that follows.<\/p>\n<h2>The audit process<\/h2>\n<p>We start by taking <strong>an inventory of all the pages<\/strong> on a site. One of our web content officers systematically goes through it to collect information for each page, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the page title<\/li>\n<li>its level in the site structure<\/li>\n<li>when it was last updated<\/li>\n<li>its overall content quality (measured against our content standards)<\/li>\n<li>whether there\u2019s any content embedded or being fed in from elsewhere<\/li>\n<li>whether it\u2019s linked from the menu<\/li>\n<li>if it links to any documents<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We\u00a0make an <strong>assessment of each page<\/strong>\u00a0and recommend whether it\u00a0should be retained, improved or deleted.<\/p>\n<p>For pages\u00a0marked for improvement we\u2019ll also provide some context, or a recommendation for how the page could be built using the new content types.<\/p>\n<p>The resulting spreadsheet is a riot of colour\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/04\/audit-example.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1652\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/04\/audit-example-1024x253.png\" alt=\"Example content audit spreadsheet\" width=\"584\" height=\"144\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/04\/audit-example-1024x253.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/04\/audit-example-300x74.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/04\/audit-example-768x190.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/04\/audit-example-500x124.png 500w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/04\/audit-example.png 1880w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Acting on the audit<\/h2>\n<p>When the audit is finished, the auditor sits down with the project manager to go through the findings.<\/p>\n<p>The project manager uses the outcome of the audit to work with the site\u2019s owners and editors to agree the next steps.<\/p>\n<p>The information gathered in the audit helps us to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>restructure sites<\/li>\n<li>inform work needed before migration into T4<\/li>\n<li>identify where we can improve content<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The audit also provides <strong>a snapshot of the size and complexity of a site<\/strong> at a specific point.
