This makes it easier for visitors to work out when things are happening.<\/p>\n<p>It also makes scanning a page for key information much quicker.<\/p>\n<p>In the latest of our Quick Guide series, here\u2019s a timely reminder of our best practice for dates and times:<\/p>\n<h2>Dates<\/h2>\n<p>Dates have <strong>no punctuation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The order should be <strong>day month year<\/strong> eg Thursday 4 August 2016.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>date range<\/strong> should look like this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2011 to 2012<\/li>\n<li>Friday 28 February to Monday 3 March<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sometimes space is an issue, eg in tables. In this case, it\u2019s fine to use truncated months eg Jan, Feb, Mar.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve also set standards for <strong>writing decades and centuries<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>1930s<\/strong> not 1930&#8217;s<\/li>\n<li><strong>20th century<\/strong> not twentieth century<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Times<\/h2>\n<p>We use the\u00a0<strong>24 hour clock. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This makes times <strong>accessible to international audiences<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some principles for presenting times:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>17.30<\/strong> not 5:30pm or 1730hrs<\/li>\n<li><strong>00.00<\/strong> not midnight<\/li>\n<li><strong>12.00<\/strong> not midday or 12 noon<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For periods of time, you can\u00a0<strong>use a hyphen between start and end times<\/strong>.
