{"id":1940,"date":"2016-08-30T11:26:33","date_gmt":"2016-08-30T10:26:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/?p=1940"},"modified":"2016-08-24T16:30:41","modified_gmt":"2016-08-24T15:30:41","slug":"usability-heads-in-the-right-direction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/2016\/08\/30\/usability-heads-in-the-right-direction\/","title":{"rendered":"Usability heads in the right direction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019ve built something new.\u00a0It\u2019s a widget\u00a0for giving your web users easy access to clear directions for the location of your school\/faculty\/service.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the efficient way for our lovely web editors to help potential visitors to the University.<\/p>\n<p>It eliminates the need for paragraphs of vague\/potentially incorrect routes to take:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>roads<\/li>\n<li>rail services<\/li>\n<li>walking routes<\/li>\n<li>cycling routes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Our new T4 content type is ideal for your website\u2019s Find Us or Contact Us page.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How it works<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re seeking to add this content type, you\u2019ll need to choose\u00a0<strong>14. Google directions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>We advise you add this to the bottom of your page, as it sits to the left under preceding content. Use it further up and people might miss something you\u2019ve written that is important.<\/p>\n<p>There are two boxes to fill out once you\u2019ve selected this content type. The first is title, which should be filled out with:<\/p>\n<p><strong>DIRECTIONS: insert name of your school\/service\/faculty here<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The second box relates to where you actually want to send your website users.<\/p>\n<p>Because much of the university campus has the same postcode, <strong>you need to enter the building name and postcode<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>An example for the Institute of Cellular Medicine, would be:<\/p>\n<p><strong>William Leech Building NE2 4HH<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Then just update and approve your content and wait for it to publish.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What your users get<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your website users will see a search facility on the page with a Find Us button.\u00a0All they need to do is add their address or postcode into the box and click on the button.<\/p>\n<p>They will instantly arrive on a Google Maps page that will plot the\u00a0routes to your location:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>road<\/li>\n<li>rail<\/li>\n<li>walking<\/li>\n<li>cycling<\/li>\n<li>flight (if they\u2019re far enough away)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Because it\u2019s all done through Google, the information is constantly updated to remain as accurate as it can be.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also a visual representation that takes you through the journey and works with GPS, instead of paragraphs that vaguely get your users here.<\/p>\n<p>An example is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/demo\/content-types\/directions\/\">on our demo site<\/a>.
