Since we started the Go Mobile process, we’ve deleted nearly 5,000 pages\u00a0from university websites.<\/p>\n

Many of these pages were out of date or duplicated content from elsewhere on the web. They were confusing our users\u00a0by presenting information that had no currency or relevance.\u00a0They were, essentially, digital clutter.<\/p>\n

We have a minimalist approach to the web. We like simple websites<\/strong> that provide information quickly\u00a0and efficiently by using clear language<\/strong>\u00a0and an effective, uncluttered design<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This minimalist approach is better for users<\/strong> because it helps create websites that are helpful and easy to use. It’s also better for you<\/strong>, our editors, because it offers a formula for creating good content and a framework for prioritising information.<\/p>\n

Here are some tips to help you approach your website with a more minimalist mindset:<\/p>\n

Be simple and clear <\/strong><\/p>\n

In terms of both design and language.<\/p>\n

Check\u00a0our\u00a0editorial<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0content<\/a>\u00a0guidelines for advice on how to write and edit for the web. Use readability tools (like Clarity Grader<\/a> and the Hemingway app<\/a>) to ensure your language is clear.<\/p>\n

Focus on the essential <\/strong><\/p>\n

Your users want answers to specific questions. They should be able to find things\u00a0quickly and easily, without being distracted by lots of unhelpful or irrelevant information.<\/p>\n

Treat your users’ time with respect – give them what’s essential so they can move on.<\/p>\n

Eliminate the unnecessary <\/strong><\/p>\n

Everything on your website should serve a purpose<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The purpose could be anything from informing<\/strong> someone of a key date, to inspiring<\/strong> them with a great story. If you can\u2019t figure out what the purpose is, it probably shouldn\u2019t be there.<\/p>\n

Images, videos and quotes should only be used when they support the core content of a page<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Foreground functionality<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bells and whistles can be great, but they should never compromise the functionality of a website. Design choices should help people navigate your site<\/a>, not impede their journey by bombarding them with attractive but unnecessary\u00a0elements.<\/p>\n

Make deliberate choices<\/strong><\/p>\n

As a web editor, you’ll receive lots of requests to add new content to your site. You need to make strong, thoughtful\u00a0choices about what belongs there.<\/p>\n

Lots of exciting things are possible in T4, and it’s easier than ever to upload new content to the web. But – to paraphrase Jeff Goldblum in Jurrasic Park – think more about what you\u00a0should\u00a0<\/em>do, not what you\u00a0<\/em>can<\/em> do.<\/p>\n
