This will reduce the number of broken links in our\u00a0websites<\/p>\n<p>You can check<strong>\u00a0what links are on your website<\/strong>\u00a0and where they are linking to with\u00a0Siteimprove&#8217;s Inventory module.\u00a0You can also\u00a0<strong>use the\u00a0section link in T4 to link to web pages\u00a0<\/strong>within the content management system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Section links in T4<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In T4 using\u00a0<strong>a section link<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>reduces the number\u00a0of broken links on your website<\/strong>. If the\u00a0page\u00a0being\u00a0linked to moves within a site structure the link is maintained. If the page being linked to is deleted the link will be removed from content.<\/p>\n<p>Over\u00a050% of our websites are now in the content management system, so you can\u00a0<strong>link to most central and school websites with a section link<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Find out which\u00a0sites your\u00a0website links\u00a0to<\/h2>\n<p>Before you can update your website links\u00a0you need to find out what links are\u00a0in your web pages.<\/p>\n<p>You can use\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/2015\/11\/20\/using-siteimprove-to-find-content-and-assets-on-your-website\/\">Siteimprove&#8217;s Inventory module<\/a>\u00a0to see a list of all links used in your website. Using the inventory makes\u00a0it easy to identify\u00a0the sections\u00a0in T4 which contain the link.<\/p>\n<p>Having found the link in T4 you\u00a0can re-link the content\u00a0to the destination page using\u00a0a &#8216;Section link&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Find and\u00a0replace redirected links<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When a\u00a0website moves\u00a0into\u00a0the content management system, its address may\u00a0change.\u00a0Pages can move within the site structure or be removed from the site.<\/p>\n<p>To avoid creating broken links across our websites\u00a0we may use\u00a0a redirect. This takes you from the\u00a0old page address to a\u00a0new location within a site structure. But <strong>when a\u00a0redirect expires\u00a0the links in content will\u00a0break<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Use\u00a0the inventory to\u00a0identify which links use a\u00a0redirect\u00a0and update the links so that they point to the correct destination page.<\/p>\n<p>A link which\u00a0redirects\u00a0is marked in the Links overview\u00a0list as\u00a0<strong>301 Moved Permanently.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Clicking\u00a0to the right of a link shows you\u00a0where\u00a0the link appears in content.\u00a0Clicking to the left of the link displays the redirect destination page:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/11\/Redirect.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2111 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/11\/Redirect-1024x591.png\" alt=\"Redirect links destination address\" width=\"584\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/11\/Redirect-1024x591.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/11\/Redirect-300x173.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/11\/Redirect-768x443.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/11\/Redirect-500x289.png 500w, https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/files\/2016\/11\/Redirect.png 1665w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In this example, the link in the content\u00a0is\u00a0http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/dental\/study\/undergraduate\/treatingpatients.htm but the new destination is\u00a0http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/dental\/study\/undergraduate\/.<\/p>\n<p>As the\u00a0new destination page is\u00a0located in T4\u00a0you can use\u00a0this information to help you\u00a0find the link in the content management system. You can then change\u00a0it to a &#8216;Section link&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keeping on top of broken links<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Broken links on your site cause frustration for the user, and can damage your reputation. It&#8217;s important therefore that you keep on top of fixing existing broken links, and pre-empt any future broken links that might occur when redirects expire.<\/p>\n<p>Using Siteimprove to do this makes the task much easier.
