If we know who we\u2019re talking to and what their tasks and questions are we can create websites to meet their needs and achieve our business goals.<\/p>\n<p>Talking about abstract, generic \u2018users\u2019 though is not helpful. After all users are people &#8211; living, breathing individuals with motivations, needs and goals. And that\u2019s where user personas come in\u2026<\/p>\n<p>A persona is a fictional representation of a group of target users who have similar needs, goals and behaviours.<\/p>\n<h2>User-centred approach<\/h2>\n<p>To enable us to take a more user-centred approach when developing websites and creating web content, the Corporate Web team are leading on a project to create personas for all our digital audiences.<\/p>\n<p>Jane and I recently attended the Nielsen Normal Group (NNg)\u00a0training <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nngroup.com\/training\/course\/1542\/personas\/\">Personas: Turn User Data Into User-Centered Design<\/a> to pick up some tips on how to create personas. Both inspiring and practical, the course furnished us with techniques to create personas and achieve stakeholder buy-in.<\/p>\n<h2>Benefits of personas<\/h2>\n<p>Personas are valuable because they <strong>bring our abstract users to life<\/strong>, making us more likely to relate to and care about them. They:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>tap into our <strong>empathy for people<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>make our audiences <strong>memorable to us<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>help us <strong>predict users\u2019 behaviour<\/strong> because we understand their attitudes and needs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Personas make us more likely to design for our users rather than designing for our organisation, or copying our competitors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\">\u201c<em>Framing a statement around a specific persona breaks the listeners out of self-referential thinking and removes the speaker\u2019s reliance on opinions, shifting the discussion away from personal judgments toward that particular persona\u2019s needs<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 180px\">Aurora Harley, Nielsen Norman group (NNg)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Personas feed into story mapping<\/strong> so that every time we develop a new section of a website or design a new feature we\u2019ll think of the journey from our personas\u2019 points of view. This means that we\u2019re more likely to develop websites that <strong>meet our users\u2019 needs<\/strong> rather than designing features and writing content based just on our opinions.<\/p>\n<p>As pointed out by Aurora Harley, personas also \u201cfocus design efforts on a common goal\u201d. They have the power to <strong>align attitudes in a team<\/strong>, again because they help us <strong>focus on the user<\/strong> rather than individual attitudes and opinions. This enables us to design a usable service that meets our customers\u2019 needs.<\/p>\n<h2>Based on user research<\/h2>\n<p>Like all data, personas can\u2019t be used in isolation. It\u2019s important to use personas alongside other data such as analytics, market segmentation, usability testing and subject matter experts.<\/p>\n<p>Personas are fictional but they are based on <strong>user research<\/strong> and <strong>existing knowledge of our audiences<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>First steps<\/h2>\n<p>Jane and I are starting with <strong>researcher personas<\/strong>.
