{"id":610,"date":"2015-05-19T15:13:04","date_gmt":"2015-05-19T14:13:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/?p=610"},"modified":"2015-05-18T16:38:24","modified_gmt":"2015-05-18T15:38:24","slug":"training-our-editors-to-think-digital-first","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/2015\/05\/19\/training-our-editors-to-think-digital-first\/","title":{"rendered":"Training our Editors to Think Digital First"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our Go Mobile programme is the driver for some <strong>brand new training to get the University thinking digital first<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Raising the bar<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>We&#8217;re training our web editors to operate the new content management system &#8211; T4.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve also invited key site owners to come and learn about managing a site. This includes setting goals for content and best practice in writing for the web.<\/p>\n<p>The first sessions ran on 7 and 8 May for trainees from the:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Undergraduate and Postgraduate marketing teams<\/li>\n<li>Research Office<\/li>\n<li>Institute for Sustainability<\/li>\n<li>School of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Day 1: Writing and Planning Web Content<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>We want to get our web editors really thinking about their content.<\/p>\n<p>The University doesn\u2019t want\u00a0a team of content-putter-uppers. It needs<strong> digitally savvy writers<\/strong> who understand what their site is for and how to evaluate it.<\/p>\n<p>Day 1 introduces setting a site purpose and how you prioritise content to support it. It was good to be able to try out some exercises we&#8217;d picked up at Confab Europe (a content strategy conference).\u00a0 Even better, our editors seemed to really understand them and could see how they might use them.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;[The] site purpose planning doc was super helpful!&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The session also covers tips for <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/category\/content\/\">writing web content<\/a> and introduce a<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ncl.ac.uk\/web\/category\/tools\/\"> range of tools to help you<\/a> do this.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The writing tips I know, but still find hard to put into practice\u2026it was a useful refresher.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>Day 2: T4 Training <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Our T4 training day provides an introduction to the Content Management System. It showcases the idea of responsive design and how<strong> we\u2019re configuring T4 to support editors<\/strong> to write for a range of devices.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Having news and staff lists in one place is fantastic.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>Empowering editors<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Site editors can more easily influence the design of their content in T4. The first editors are starting a 2-4 week period of supported editing. In this time they\u2019ll get to apply new layouts, add quality assets, and improve their content for reading online.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a chance to <strong>cut words, tighten copy and focus on users. <\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Initial feedback<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>As we go, we\u2019re gathering feedback on the training topics, the delivery and the new CMS. We\u2019re in Beta mode at the moment \u2013 but hope we\u2019ve got a good starting point.
