Booking Robinson Library Foyer

Use of Robinson Library Foyer (and tables outside the Library)

We have had a lot of queries about booking the foyer and provision of tables for events outside the Library since Christmas, particularly since the Student Union has been closed. In order to try and keep track of what is happening, I have opened a directory entitled Foyer Bookings in G:/All/Bookings/2011/booking sheets. Everyone should be able to look at the booking sheet (please let me know if you cannot) but entries will be made by the Office staff as all bookings should come through the Office to ensure that necessary permissions have been given, that we do not have any multiple bookings and that all enquirers receive a consistent message.
Please can all Library staff who want to book the foyer let the Office have full details as far in advance as possible so that they can book it for you. They will also enter your event onto the Events section of the Library web pages. Please ask anyone who is not a member of Library staff and who enquires about using the foyer or tables outside the Library, to send an email with full details to: J.A.Rankin@ncl.ac.uk. If anyone would like further information, please just let me know.

Theses in SAPL Room

Items in the SAPL room shouldn’t be requested electronically as they are just in the room on L3 and open access. However we have had a couple recently requested through the link on the catalogue. If you are dealing with the requests just check whether it is SAPL local (in compact shelving) you are looking for. If the request (printed by Stores) says SAPL room we need to send the reader an email explaining where to find it. We are investigating whether we can remove the request button for the SAPL room items to try and stop this happening.

If the Architecture thesis is numbered 1 to 150 it is in the SAPL room, but numbers 151 onwards are downstairs in the compact shelving, (regardless of what it says on the catalogue).

Restricted access theses

Some theses are not available because the author has restricted access to their work. This will show up on the Opac record but for the newer stock TS actually now suppress the catalogue entry so readers don’t know we have them.

Thanks
Margaret

Theft in the Library

Notes to clarify what happens when a theft is reported in the Library.

The immediate response, usually from staff at Reception, is to contact Security either they will come over or the reader will go to them. A Library incident form is also completed, available at Reception, and this then goes to Wayne.

Once Security are involved they deal with the incident from then on and there’s no more that the Library can do. If bank cards are missing, Security will arrange for the reader to phone their bank and, depending on the nature of the theft and the wishes of the reader, Security will report the theft to the Newcastle Police.

All CCTV on campus is dealt with by Security and can only be viewed on receipt of a written request from the Police (data protection). Unfortunately the Library can’t ask for it to be checked nor can we view it, so if the reader subsequently asks for the CCTV to be checked, please refer them back to the Police / Security.

Eduroam

Eduroam for Newcastle staff and students

What is Eduroam?
Eduroam is part of the national Janet Roaming Service (JRS) which allows staff and students to access internet services at participating institutions using your usual username and password.
What should I do to make sure I can use eduroam at another institution?

You will need to do some preliminary set-up prior to your visiting another institution and you are advised to do this before leaving Newcastle as eduroam assumes that any support will be given by your home institution and not at your visitor institution.

You can check if the institution you are visiting is participating in the eduroam scheme by checking on the Janet pages: www.ja.net.

You will need to configure your laptop according to the operating system you use. ISS has provided details for each: http://www.ncl.ac.uk/iss/netcomms/network/services/eduroam/

If you have difficulties whilst you are away from Newcastle, you should contact ISS at Newcastle and not that of the institution you are visiting.

Eduroam at Newcastle, visitor guide

What is Eduroam?
Eduroam allows users (visiting students and staff) from participating institutions to securely access the internet using local username and logins that is, the username and login you would use at your home institution.
I am a visiting student/researcher/lecturer can I use eduroam?
Although Newcastle provides visitor access to eduroam , much of the set-up and preparation should be done prior to arriving at Newcastle.
You should contact your home institution IT support to enable access if you have not already done so. You can check if your institution is participating at the JANET website.
How do I connect to eduroam?
Support is provided by your home institution and not Newcastle. Even though you are located here in Newcastle, and connecting through the Newcastle network, you should contact your home IT support for any help. However, below are some hints and tips:

Typically you will need your roaming credentials which are usually your local username and password plus a realm so that your request to authenticate is passed to the correct home institution e.g userid@domain.ac.uk. Again, your home institution should be able to provide your roaming credentials.

Newcastle implements the Janet Roaming Service (JRS) tier 2.

You should connect to the wireless network using the SSID eduroam and an 802.1x supplicant.

For more information see :http://www.ncl.ac.uk/iss/netcomms/network/services/eduroam/

If all else fails, contact IT support at your home institution.

Stationery

To order most stationery items including things like Ithaca rolls, just send an email to the General Office at lib-genoff@ncl.ac.uk.

Photocopying supplies (including white photocopying paper) should still be ordered from the Bindery using the database but the General Office will deal with all other items including coloured paper.

Electrics

If the front counter/self-services go off again (has happened 3 or 4 times yesterday and today) please contact Michael or another porter who can re-set the switch in the room near the ILL helpdesk. (It’s not an IS thing apparently)

New electronic system for bindery requests

Dear all
I am informing staff of the new electronic system for bindery requests.
In a similar fashion to the store request system if an item that is in the bindery is requested the customer will be directed to a form to fill in.There will also be a request option which appears next to an item in bindery even if the customer is not logged on.
By clicking on request they will be taken to a form (very like the store form) which can be filled in and sent to periodicals (who will deal with the request and inform the customer of progress with their request).
The binding form is now also listed under lending services on the home page of the catalogue.
The forms can be accessed by the link:
http://www.ncl.ac.uk/library/services/lending/bindery/

The only difference to Reader Services staff is that they will no longer need to fill in the manual form (orange for journals and grey for books). The customer will be able to fill in the form themselves and forward it to periodicals.
Regarding collection the customer will receive an email from periodicals when their item is ready to collect and present their smartcard at the service desk where they can receive their item for consultation.

If you experience any problems using this new service please let us know in periodicals as there will no doubt some things which may need tweaking

Kind regards

Sara
