If the front counter/self-services go off again (has happened 3 or 4 times yesterday and today) please contact Michael or another porter who can re-set the switch in the room near the ILL helpdesk. (It’s not an IS thing apparently)

New electronic system for bindery requests

Dear all
I am informing staff of the new electronic system for bindery requests.
In a similar fashion to the store request system if an item that is in the bindery is requested the customer will be directed to a form to fill in.There will also be a request option which appears next to an item in bindery even if the customer is not logged on.
By clicking on request they will be taken to a form (very like the store form) which can be filled in and sent to periodicals (who will deal with the request and inform the customer of progress with their request).
The binding form is now also listed under lending services on the home page of the catalogue.
The forms can be accessed by the link:
http://www.ncl.ac.uk/library/services/lending/bindery/

The only difference to Reader Services staff is that they will no longer need to fill in the manual form (orange for journals and grey for books). The customer will be able to fill in the form themselves and forward it to periodicals.
Regarding collection the customer will receive an email from periodicals when their item is ready to collect and present their smartcard at the service desk where they can receive their item for consultation.

If you experience any problems using this new service please let us know in periodicals as there will no doubt some things which may need tweaking

Kind regards

Sara

Recalls over Easter vacation

The Easter vac changes will be made to the recall procedures from 25th March. This will mean that after that time we will still send out recalls to let people know that their book is requested but we will not adjust due dates.

During the vacation Holds are still just kept for one week, and Holds to collect with other borrowers waiting are still just issued for a week.

JSTOR article-level linking problem

There’s a problem with article-level linking to JSTOR at the moment. If you get any queries about this, the advice is to remove any citation information from the Find it window, link through to the general page for the journal required and then to manually navigate to the article wanted.

It’s been reported to Exlibris, but may not be resolved until next month’s update (about 10th April). I’ve put a note on all the JSTOR titles, but I know from experience that people don’t always read these…

I’ll remove the note once the problem is resolved.

Store due dates problem on Aleph

First thing this morning the long loan and Store due dates for all categories except staff and associates went slightly awry (the result of a change I made on the system yesterday…….sorry).

The long loans were fixed by 9.30 but the Store due dates are still not right. It is still issuing to Aug 2012 (unless the user’s record expires earlier and then it issues to their expiry date). The tables are now correct and we’ve restarted the server but it won’t correct itself so we’re hoping it will be fixed overnight. If not we’ll have to contact Ex Libris on Monday.

Once it’s fixed we’ll run a report to pick up any users with the wrong date but in the meantime if there are any Long Loan renewals from early this morning, or Store books with the wrong date please just change it.

I’m not sure if changing the dates this morning will affect any holds made during that time of so if there are any oddities, this might be why.

New status on Library Catalogue

We’ve added a new process status to Aleph. If you see a book on the opac with a status “Out of Collection Exhibition” it means the book is being used in a library display, usually by LIM.

At the minute there is a new display on Level 2 with lots of books on climate change. Readers can take the books to borrow but they will have to come to the desk to have the status removed first. We thought it was better to do this than leave the books saying In library and staff (possibly) spending a lot of time looking for them when in fact they are not missing.

Thanks
Margaret

Attached is a helpsheet for the product. There are also some short video tutorials within the database itself under help.

Please forward or promote with relevant colleagues and/or students
As always, we welcome your feedback on our trials – please just email your views to me (louise.gordon@ncl.ac.uk )

Architecture theses

All the Architecture theses and dissertations in the Library are now catalogued and included in the Theses collection on Aleph. It is now possible to do a single search of the Theses collection on the catalogue to find Architecture theses and dissertations.

As part of the process there has been a change to the theses that are kept in the SAPL room on level 3. At the request of SAPL the examples of UG dissertations have been moved from the compactus and they are now shelved in the SAPL room. The shelfmark is SAPL Room AT[number], e.g. SAPL Room AT100.

This collection has been refreshed with the addition of recent dissertations in place of some of the older dissertations which have been returned to the School of Architecture. A new AT list is available at the Information Desk on level 3.

The historical local collection of Architecture theses that was in the SAPL room has been transferred to the compact shelving on level 1. This collection has the shelfmark SAPL Local [number] with numbers running from 151-366. Some of the older dissertations which were of local interest have been added to the original collection.

Searching for articles in trade magazines

We have had a couple of queries from Marketing students looking for articles from trade or magazine publications. They have to find some peer reviewed articles and then compare them with trade articles.
There are two different routes to look for some relevant material:

The student knows the name of the trade magazine e.g :
Marketing news
Marketing week
Adweek

Then uses Find It to access the title and then does a keyword for articles within it. Keywords seem to be Integrated Marketing Communications.

The other option If they don’t know the name of a publication, if they keyword search in Business Source Premier once you get a list of results you can then refine to narrow down to trade publications only.

Hope that helps in case there are any more queries at the information desk

Thanks
