Making e-books appealing

Hi all,

Just forwarding the contents of an interesting tweet by @MLBurgess linking to his blog where he talks about e-books and how to make them more appealing to students.

One of things that the RSAslib team have found, when helping students on the info desk or at the Service Desk, is there is still quite a lot of reluctance, by some students, to use an e-book, even if it is the last book, or the only copy.

Lost smartcards

When a Smartcard is returned to the Robinson Library can you please refrain from blocking the readers’ card with the message ‘SC in box’. We have decided NOT to do this because when the student collects the Smartcard after the desk has closed or from the Porters on the Reception Desk the block cannot be removed. When the student then tries to borrow a book they are unable to do so.

Can you please put a message on Aleph (not a block) to say that the Smartcard is in the box AND also put a message on the Smartcard Database to say the card can be collected from the Robinson Library so that staff in Kings’ Gate know to send the student to us.

When a Smartcard has been reported lost then please remember to BLOCK readers’ record on Aleph and expire the Smartcard and chip date and write message in notes field on Smartcard Database.

Many thanks,
Janice (Registration Team, Robinson Library)

Network Cables Loan

Due to public demand we are going to loan out network cables to library members for use with their own laptop.

Marianne has put three cables in a box with a sheet to record the name/smartcard of the person and the time of issue and return. This box is next to the laptop cables. If demand increases, more will be supplied.

How to check when a user has come into the Library

You can use the Smartcard database to check dates and times a reader has entered the Library.

Get the record up, click on the pie chart icon on the right and put in the range of dates you want, if they aren’t included in the default.

You need to remember Data Protection issues before giving this information out. However there’s an exemption in the Data Protection Act when police can be given details if they are investigating a crime/suspect.

BBC Domesday Project Archive

In 1986, 900 years after the original Domesday Book, the BBC published the Domesday Project. The project an attempt to capture the essence of life in the United Kingdom. Over a million people contributed to this digital snapshot of the country & I was one of then at school in Bedlington at the time.

At the begining of May 2011, this information was given it’s own website in orer to add to the information agtered and (more impostantly for us library folk) make available an amazing archive of images and memories from the 1980’s.

FILLING PAPER TRAYS

FILLING PAPER TRAYS IN CLUSTER PRINTERS

Paper is stored behind screens along from printers; each packet contains one ream of paper.
Open the paper ream and remove any creased sheets from top or bottom of ream.
Open bottom printer trays and carefully place paper inside, gently flatten with hand to line up the paper.
An empty lower tray will take three reams, an upper tray will take one.
Please do not put paper above the markers on the inside of the printers on either tray 2 or 3. There are markers on both the upper and lower tray, please do not overfill as this causes jams.
The colour printer only accepts one ream of paper in each tray, a message will appear in the small display if you overfill the printer.
If the display starts flickering the paper gauges may have moved slightly. Open up the tray, remove paper and align the slots to A4. The display stops flickering once this has been done correctly.

Thank you

Booking Robinson Library Foyer

Use of Robinson Library Foyer (and tables outside the Library)

We have had a lot of queries about booking the foyer and provision of tables for events outside the Library since Christmas, particularly since the Student Union has been closed. In order to try and keep track of what is happening, I have opened a directory entitled Foyer Bookings in G:/All/Bookings/2011/booking sheets. Everyone should be able to look at the booking sheet (please let me know if you cannot) but entries will be made by the Office staff as all bookings should come through the Office to ensure that necessary permissions have been given, that we do not have any multiple bookings and that all enquirers receive a consistent message.
Please can all Library staff who want to book the foyer let the Office have full details as far in advance as possible so that they can book it for you. They will also enter your event onto the Events section of the Library web pages. Please ask anyone who is not a member of Library staff and who enquires about using the foyer or tables outside the Library, to send an email with full details to: J.A.Rankin@ncl.ac.uk. If anyone would like further information, please just let me know.

Theses in SAPL Room

Items in the SAPL room shouldn’t be requested electronically as they are just in the room on L3 and open access. However we have had a couple recently requested through the link on the catalogue. If you are dealing with the requests just check whether it is SAPL local (in compact shelving) you are looking for. If the request (printed by Stores) says SAPL room we need to send the reader an email explaining where to find it. We are investigating whether we can remove the request button for the SAPL room items to try and stop this happening.

If the Architecture thesis is numbered 1 to 150 it is in the SAPL room, but numbers 151 onwards are downstairs in the compact shelving, (regardless of what it says on the catalogue).

Restricted access theses

Some theses are not available because the author has restricted access to their work. This will show up on the Opac record but for the newer stock TS actually now suppress the catalogue entry so readers don’t know we have them.

Thanks
Margaret
