Newcastle Dental Bioaerosols Research Group

Based in the School of Dental Sciences at Newcastle University, The Newcastle Dental Bioaerosols Research Group aims to understand the bioaerosols which are produced during dental procedures and how these can be controlled to reduce the risk of disease transmission.

The groups is made up of clinical and non-clinical academics with backgrounds in microbiology, periodontology, restorative dentistry, and oral surgery. We collaborate with other researchers and scientists with expertise in aerobiology, engineering, metrology, infectious diseases, and virology.

Aerosol and droplets produced by a dental handpiece with two irrigation configurations. (b) produces significantly less aerosol. Reproduced from Allison et al. 2021
