Sharing Practice
We recently ran an app swap event at the Learning and Teaching conference. This was very well attended, although the room layout was not conducive to the collaborative nature of these events. We managed, and the participants contributed some fantastic apps, some of which are outlined below.
Evernote is a suite type of software and services, designed for notetaking and archiving. A “note” can be a piece of formatted text, a full webpage or webpage excerpt, a photograph, a voice memo, or a handwritten “ink” note. Notes can also have file attachments.
Mendeley is a free reference manager and academic social network. Make your own fully-searchable library in seconds, cite as you write, and read and annotate your PDFs on any device.
PubMed comprises more than 23 million citations for biomedical literature from MEDLINE, life science journals, and online books
Free calls, text and picture sharing with anyone, anywhere!
Use iAnnotate to read, mark up, and share PDF, DOC, PPT and image files
Speech to text software. Once the software has ‘learned’ your voice it is very powerful.
Samsung notetaking tool
Editorial is a plain text editor for the iPad with powerful automation tools and an inline preview for writing Markdown.
The Nearpod platform enables teachers to use their iPads to manage content on students’ iPads, iPhones, iPods or Macs. It combines presentation, collaboration, and real-time assessment tools into one integrated solution. The main presentation on this session was run through Nearpod.

Free group video calls / messaging.
Lync
Video and web conference / online meetings tool.
Skype
Similar to Lync. Online video calls / meetings.

Web conferencing software.
Repligo
RepliGo Reader is an android application to enable viewing, form filling and annotating of PDF files.
Gamification of language learning
Another app that gamifies the learning of languages
Newcastle University’s app used for video observation for self- reflection and improvement
Blackboards own mobile app, linking through to the VLE.
Productivity
Wunderlist is a very simple, well designed and easy-to-use task management tool
Fast reminder app for multiple platforms. No need for an account. Very simple to use.

These apps create Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) on your device enabling you to overcome location restrictions that some websites place on their content.

FieldtripGB:
Fieldtrip GB is a mobile mapping and data collection app that is available for iPhone and Android devices. It has been developed by EDINA, based at The University of Edinburgh, with support from Jisc. It will allow students, lecturers and researchers to collect data against high quality cartographic maps. The main features of the app are:
Displaynote:
DisplayNote transforms presentations for presenters and participants. Use it to present wirelessly with an iPad or Android and mirror your screen to every participant’s device. Attendees can view and capture your slides on their device and collaborate with each other in real-time.
