Duration: The internships are each expected to be for a total of 140 hours, working approximately 35 hours per week between 1 July and 26 July. Working hours will be as follows: Monday to Friday, 9.30 am – 5.30 am, with an hour break for lunch (7 working hours per day).

The interns will be given a real research problem to solve, namely hardware and software co-design for embedded systems used for environmental monitoring, such as smart water metering systems. They will work under the supervision of an academic in the School of Engineering (Dr Domenico Balsamo) and their research team at the Microsystems Research Lab. These internships are open to Newcastle University students from the School of Engineering only. The role is particularly suited to stage 2 or 3 undergraduates in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

This year International Welcome will take place w/c 9th September. The programme consists of a 3-day airport ‘meet and greet’ service based at Newcastle airport and a 3-day programme of information sessions and exhibitors, including a help desk (usually Wed-Fri), on campus in the same week. Dr Zachary Petzel is seeking a research assistant to help with developing virtual reality experiences in the School of Psychology. Development of these tools will assist in postgraduate research which focuses on factors which influence risky decision making among vulnerable groups (e.g., university students) using behavioural, cardiovascular, and neuroscience methods.

AkzoNobel are a leading marine coatings company that develops innovative solutions for marine fouling control. An intern will support Computer Vision Automated Image Analysis of Marine Microalgae (slime) Assessment. Student Work Opportunity- Animator


Role details and responsibilities: We are looking for a student to create a schematic animation of the temporomandibular joint and its articular disc to help patients understand disc displacement on a patient-based video the Dental school is currently producing. The animation would need to involve the following 3 stages:


1) Normal disc movement – disc moving synchronously with the hinge
2) Disc displacement – discs moving out of position between hinge and translation motions
3) Disc displacement without reduction – as (2) above but the disc doesn’t move back and the joint can only hinge and not translate

Role Overview/Background:

This casual work opportunity is being offered by the Learning and Teaching Development Service at Newcastle University and is being facilitated by the Jobs on Campus team in the Careers Service.
This role is expected to be for a total of 10 – 20 hours, approximately 2 hours per week between February and May. Working days and times are flexible.

The university will soon be implementing a learning analytics solution supplied by Jisc
(https://www.jisc.ac.uk). The purpose of the learning analytics system is to collate meaningful student data from existing university systems for personal tutors to support tutoring conversations, and ensure students receive support when needed. A casual work opportunity is available as part of the Student Learning Analytics Project Team in the Learning Teaching and Development Service (LTDS) based in the Marjorie Robinson Library. The purpose of the role is to create innovative ways of communicating the use and benefits of the system with students.
The output from this role will form the foundation for ongoing communication with the student body regarding the system ensuring co-creation and student voice are embedded in the roll-out; enabling students to understand how the system can be used. Communicating the use and benefits will require consultation with students to determine the best way for them to engage with the system before producing the promotional material.
