App Development Intern at Edwards Commercial Cleaning

We are a family owned and operated commercial cleaning company based in Newcastle but operating throughout the North East and Yorkshire. Employing over 500 staff and with a turnover of £3.5m we are always looking to grow and improve on what we currently do. Our aim is to be the very best of the best.Internship Overview

We are in the process of moving our business over to G Suite and we require Computing Science Interns to develop apps that will link and incorporate data into G Suite. The first stage of this will be to develop apps that will monitor attendance and quality.

Cleaners will use a tag system to log in and out to allow supervisors to know who is on site. The supervisor will also use an app to rate the quality of service. Another aspect of the project is the development of a dashboard that will display attendance and quality ratings at a glance. Clients will receive their own portal log in via a given google account that will display their dashboard and store documents etc.

We know exactly what we require from the apps and what they will show, however we are looking for the technical ability to develop this and build the apps.

The project would suit two students who could work collaboratively and independently each for 100 hours. Our office premises are in Gosforth however we are very flexible and it is possible to work remotely at your convenience and to have regular update meetings in the office.  Support and guidance will be available from our Technical Manager.

 Student Specification

We are looking for two students with experience in the following areas:

  • Good knowledge of G Suite.
  • Experience with Java, JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3 and Jquery.
  • Solid understanding of App maker in G Suite.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of service-oriented architecture and application development.
  • Experience using object-oriented programming and software design patterns.
  • Experience using deployment workflow and task automation processes in G Suite.
  • Experience in script writing for Google Sheets, Google Sites, Google Presentations and Google Docs (JavaScript)
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to others.
  • Good knowledge of Chrome OS.
  • Able to develop Google Sites (UI design, data integration).

Internship Learning Objectives

  1. Remote working requires discipline and excellent communication and organisation skills. You’ll need to be a good listener and problem solver as what we’re doing is bespoke.
  2. You’ll develop apps to work from staff mobiles which will provide real time quality audit results to the clients and our managers. In our industry, this is virtually unheard of. We’ll be testing before rolling out across the client base and providing G Suite portals which will be a ‘dashboard’ for facilities managers. This may involve training people too.
  3. We’re moving from Linux servers and Microsoft to G Suite to be more collaborative and provide exciting add- on’s for our clients. You’ll help develop a new way to record attendance in real time for the clients and management using NFC tags and showing results on the G Suite portals.
