AkzoNobel, Gateshead: 12 month placement

Please see details below of a 12 month placement offered at AkzoNobel Performance Coatings, Gateshead. To apply please send CV and covering letter to Richard Ramsden (contact details below).

Background

We coat surfaces which are exposed to the elements for large amount of time in challenging environments – Singapore, China, Korea etc. We then overcoat these surfaces with fresh coatings to provide protection (e.g. anticorrosion). One of the major problems with this is that the adhesion of fresh paint can fail, if the underlying surface chemistry has changed (i.e. weathered). In order to understand this, one of my colleagues embarked on a really ambitious program of coating panels in multiple locations around the world, measuring the surfaces with a hand-held FTIR spectrometer, overcoating the surfaces and then testing the adhesion.

The upshot of this is a large set of data which shows the degradation of the surface in a range of environments and how overcoating is affected. The problem here is that we don’t have the skills to be able to fully exploit this.

The plan

1.      We have a large bunch of Excel/CSV files which contain FTIR spectra of all the surfaces. We need to pull all these together into a database. This is complex as it has a temporal element (each panel was measured multiple times),

2.      This database can be interrogated, models build to express the degradation of surfaces over time, and resulting adhesion pass/fail. These models may include top coat, bottom coat, length of exposure, IR spectra trace, location etc.

3.      Build a proof-of-concept system which can ingest new spectra (with some associated data), append it to the database and provide a prediction on overcoating time.

4.      If time allows: pulling local environmental conditions into modelling. We measure a large range of environmental data at each of our sites (wind, rain, temperature humidity etc.) which may go some way to improving models.

Ultimately I can see this as being part of a real service we can offer to customers – namely, we scan a series of surfaces and recommend products or overcoating schedules based on their degradation.

Web development: WipeOut Music

A local music publisher has contacted us for help in updating their website. If interested, please contact John Esplen at the email address below.

We need someone to help create a more modern/well designed website. www.wipeoutmusic.com is our current site and as you can see it’s a bit… outdated to say the least. This person could come to our office in Byker to work on the site, or simply work on it from home.

The length wouldn’t be set in stone, just until the site is finished. But if they wanted to stay on for some maintenance work on the site afterwards they’d be welcome to. Start date on this work would be asap. The work would be paid at
minimum wage.

The SEO work on the site will be remotely project-managed by a friend of the business Max Brockbank who is one of the UK’s leading SEO experts (Hilton Hotels, Lastminute.com, Regus etc.), so it’ll be a great opportunity to someone to advance
their expertise in that field.

We have a second site that’s used for a Record Label that is ran in conjunction with the main business. If the person does some great work on our main site we’d be happy to pay for any extra site work done on the label side of things.

Hope this is adequate information and someone would be eager to have a go at creating a live website used by a local business in a real working environment. I think it could be really good experience for the right person!

I can be contacted on:  john@wipeoutmusic.com

It’s nothing short of a reinvention. We’re not just transforming our business model. We want to transform the way people shop. Digital Operations who support the day to day operation of our digital channels.
Media Business who are responsible for monetising our website.

The digital analytics development team on the other hand are much more about working together closely toward a single goal. Working alongside the developers and technical product owners you could be supporting planning, testing and managing stakeholders but you’ll need to do so by working closely with your colleagues.

Some parts of our team will have more scope for independent and autonomous working while others will be centred on working together closely as a team toward a single goal. Working in each of these areas will both give you the experience of working both independently and inter-dependently.
