Hawkr are a cutting edge digital media advertising specialist building innovative, scalable, and market leading software for the digital out of home advertising industry.

We are a small, specialist team based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, working with over 25+ clients across the UK and Europe and expanding – client trips included Paris, Milan and Vegas last year!

The Hawkr system allows our clients to remotely access and control 100’s of digital advertising screens and update media content including images, videos and live content such as RSS, Twitter feeds, youtube channels, and much more.

Utilising the latest web technologies, we are building on our core 100% API based product to expand our offering with facial recognition using artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Due to the nature of the product, maintenance is minimal and the development of new features is rapid with continuous improvements to the software and hardware.

The Year in Industry (YINI) scheme have two 12-month Placement opportunities commencing Sept 2018 ideally suited to students studying Computer Science with an interest in programming, ideally with experience with PHP and JavaScript.

We are looking for highly motivated applicants to become members of our development team. The placement will involve the candidate in the development and maintenance of new and existing solutions. Through this they will become skilled in our development environment and involved in our product release cycle.

Ideal candidates are likely to have a background in computing, they will be scientifically minded and have a desire to increase their technical proficiency.

From a technical perspective, successful candidates will be given the opportunity to work with various web technologies such as PHP, JavaScript, Drupal, MySQL, HTML, CSS, and .Net languages. We also have our own development language.

As a member of the development team you will also have some responsibility in supporting our current customers and solving queries that they might have regarding our products.

Junior Developer – Newcastle

As we look to grow out our suite of products, based on a common platform and under a unifying brand, the right developer will have both the skills and the personality to be part of this journey and must be ready for the exciting challenges this will bring. You should have a great interest in development and the challenges it can lead to. Your role would be to form part of a highly-skilled development team (currently 2 senior developers), involved in new product development as well as implementing new features and maintaining existing code, that will enable the business to grow at an unparalleled rate maintaining its lead in the industry. The business environment is young, energetic and vibrant where colleagues are collaborative and collegiate in their approach.

We need you to:

  • have an interest in web technologies
  • have an understanding of OOP principles and common software design patterns
  • have a basic understanding of SQL and PHP
  • have an understanding of software testing and TDD
  • have an understanding version control, ideally with Git
  • work with the existing development team and colleagues throughout the business to resolve support tickets and develop new functionality
  • be confident and self-motivated, willing to suggest new methods, tools or ideas where appropriate

Other beneficial skills are:

  • a working knowledge of Linux command line interface
  • an understanding of website security issues
  • an understanding of front-end development
  • a familiarity with Javascript and the jQuery library
  • a familiarity with CSS/SASS
