As I mentioned last week, I am afraid there will be no lectures on Thursday or Friday as I am away at a conference on the subject of cosmopolitanism.
Stages 2 and 3 have some tutorial work to get on with (see the posts below) and I am expecting some comments/replies from you. Stage 1 ought to sit in their rooms and read Plato’s Theaetetus a few times. All modules resume as normal next week and I shall be arranging some slots later in the term to make up for lost lectures.
If you’re interested in what I’m talking about at the conference, it is basically about the possibility of translation and communication of social mores, meanings and conceptions of right between diverse cultures. There are two positions in cosmopolitan thinking: those who think we ought to recognize and understand difference and those who believe, no matter our cultural differences, there is a universal foundation of morality all human beings share. Both approaches have serious problems. If you’re interested, you can read the whole paper (davidroseHegeliancosmopolitanism19.2.13) but bear in mind it is far from the finished article (no pun intended).
