MoLES PhD student Jamie McKeown presents research at STEM for BRITAIN 2026

In March, one of our excellent PhD students Jamie McKeown was selected to present his research in the prestigious STEM for Britain competition, held at the Houses of Parliament.

The event is a highly competitive scientific poster competition, organised by the Parliamentary & Scientific Committee to celebrate the work of early career researchers. Jamie had the opportunity to present a poster of his PhD research, focused on the development of partial differential equation models to describe invasive pest spread in the UK.

You can read an interview with Jamie and learn more about his research and STEM for Britain experience in the News Article here: Mathematics PhD student represents Newcastle at STEM for Britain 2026.

Congratulations Jamie!

Mathematical Ecology Workshop

Over the summer, MoLES were delighted to host the second iteration of the Mathematical Ecology Workshop at Newcastle’s School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics. The event featured talks from a diverse group of researchers across academia, industry and government, including colleagues from Defra and Fera Science Ltd. We hope to continue developing our collaborations in all areas mathematical ecology over the coming years!

Society for Mathematical Biology Meeting 2025

Some of the ecological modelling subsection of MoLES have recently returned from an exciting trip to Edmonton Canada for the Society for Mathematical Biology Meeting 2025! PhD students Kaitlyn Ries (spatiotemporal modelling of invasive species), Axa Lääperi (climate change effects on the spread of wildfires) and Matt Dopson (cyclic population dynamics) all presented their work at this large international meeting.
