Welcome to the Photography Forum!

A space for anyone who is using photography in their work, bring your questions, technical problems, top tips, share work and ideas.

The forum is a mixture of theory and practice, sharing technical skills across analogue and digital processes and looking at contemporary photography. As much as possible sessions are tailored to the interests of the group so please bring along ideas and suggestions. We’ll also be using this space to share links to good technical websites, organisations that support photographers and our top picks for places to see photography in person and online. The forum is run by Michele Allen with the support of our excellent print and photography technician Jade Sweeting.

Contact Michele if you have any questions or suggestions.

Next sessions: Friday 5th Nov 2pm -4pm Field trip Eruptions Side Gallery and Phyllis Christopher at Baltic meet outside the office, and studio photography workshop 25th Nov all day booking essential. More info below.

Session 2: Field Trip 5th Nov 2-4pm meet outside the office. We’ll be visiting two photography exhibitions at Side Gallery and Baltic Centre for contemporary art by photographers Poulomi Basu and Phyllis Christopher. Two shows with an emphasis on documentary, community and the representation of women. Including photography, installation and VR. I think this will be a good trip to think about the social function of photography and work which brings together the personal and the collective. More info below.

“Eruptions marks Indian transmedia artist and activist Poulomi Basu’s (b.1983, Calcutta) first major international solo exhibition, which will show at SIDE from 30th October 2021 – February 6th 2022. The immersive installation of VR, film and photography will showcase the development of Basu’s participatory practice between 2009 and 2021.”

“Contacts is an intimate glimpse at lesbian community in San Francisco in the ‘90s through the archive of photographer Phyllis Christopher. Belonging to a politicised tradition of documentary photography, Christopher’s handprinted and tinted images reflect how the camera participated in the performance of queer identities and feminist politics in the club and in the streets.”

Session One: 15th Oct 2021 2-4 pm Skill-sharing / your photographic problems solved! Meeting Room behind the office.

Bring a photograph to share, either from your work or by a photographer you like (it can be a print or on screen), a cardboard box and something to cover your head!

We’ll be chatting informally about how we use photography in our work, answering technical questions and talking through the resources available in the department. We’ll also be bringing along a collection of weird and wonderful cameras for you to look at and think about all the different ways we can make photographs. Then we’ll be having a go at making our own camera obscurers using cardboard boxes!
