NURL – 26
Liverpool John Moores – 0

In the biggest game of the Premier North this season it was the NURL death machine that once again came out victorious.

On a torrid day and a heavy pitch, play was slow to start with both sides coughing the ball up on several occasions. However it was NURL who struck first when Dave Knox slid his noble hips through a gap to offload to his fellow able battied backrow partner Mikey Wardrobe to set up Jimmy Phillips who opened the scoring. Statisticians across the SRL were then left scratching their heads as textbook kicker Chris Griffiths kicking duties were handed to little known Robse Greaves who slotted his first of four successful attempts.

With “Massive” Ian McPherson failing a late fitness test before the game with a season threatening spot on his arse, the dogrough NURL fanbase was worried about the notorious defence of the Owls. The Love Walrus Will Winter’s excessive cuddles of consideration for the fretful Jambler proved unnecessary as Dan Caparros once again stepped up to the plate.

In a game of inches it was the 24 around Caparros’ granite head that had the biggest impact as he used it to ram, smash and hammer any Liverpudlian that dared try impressing upon the Newcastle line. One particular drongo was counted as dropping 4 successive passes as NURL’s Snorlax repeatedly barrelled into him.

Chris Griffiths feet proved more able at stepping than kicking as he jinked his way over for 2 well worked tries which were quickly followed by Knox, who floundered over the whitewash from a suffocating ten yard dash. The game was sealed when Robseag Reaves was thankfully denied a “Dave Parker” only for Griffiths to grab complete his brace.

With NURL keeping their fellow table toppers pointless whilst racking up 26 points the omens look good for a John Moores double this Saturday and virtual guarantee of the league. A win would see the valiant heroes go within a feather of double league success for the first time in the clubs history.
