Following the heroics of the club’s second team, the stage was set for a gutsy performance from the Newcastle Owls, keen to emulate 2008’s double victory over their city rivals, the bizarrely named ‘Ninjawolves’. Despite some disruption caused by injuries in the run up to the game, NURL went in to the game at full strength, welcoming back big time accountant Dave Knox and proud father Richard Massey, and boasting student rugby league’s finest hair cut with Mikey Ward’s fine Mohawk.

NURL 2nds – 58
Northumbria 2nds – 20

By Murray James

A shiver-ridden gust of February bluster buffered the wise and pristine faces of the Owls as they strode out to face the Auld enemy. Hooting through a copyrighted Steven Thompson warm-up, two things were very clear: a) the back pitch at Gateshead Stadium appears to have recently been hired out by Spanish people in order to beat and execute donkeys; b) the opposition were a gargantuan rabble, exclusively made up of slobs, brutes, freaks and puddings.

NURL 2nds – 28
Hull University 2nds – 12

By Edward Ainscoe

On a beautiful day for rugby league football, NURL ventured into the nation’s fattest city to face a determined and experienced Hull outfit. Depleted from the outset with several notable absentees, such as Belgian international Archambeaux, the Royals had spoken of playing with pride and limiting the oppositions chances. From the kick off it was clear they would do more than this.

Newcastle Combined Squad – 38
Bradford University – 16

The Match consisted of 4 twenty minute quarters under the watchful eye of legendary SRL officiator Ian Mcregor. After a strong start Bradford were unable to live with NURL’s depth of talent amongst players new and old.
Newcastle’s try’s were spread evenly across the squad and included two fine finishes from debutants Bruce Rigby and Dan Acton.
Man of the Match for Newcastle was Fresher Rob Seagreaves who backed up his comanding attacking display with some bone-crunching shoulders in defence.

With the Gutsy Bradford side duly demolished the Season now begins in earnest.

New Players are still welcome and encouraged to join the squad at training which is running at the normal times.
