Instagram is a social media application used to post photos and view other people photos. Instagram is normally accessed through the application on can get on their phone or tablet, however it can also be accessed via the Instagram website. Click here for a PowerPoint tutorial.

Pros

Express oneself

The main reason for Instagram is to share one’s photos, whether if it is just with friends or with the public. As a result, this has become a great platform to share ones creativity through photograph, and a way to develop ones skills. This application has actually aided people in having successful blogs as well as help improve their skills for later on in life skills.

Way to connect

This like all other social media applications help people connect no matter where they live in the world, this helps one connect through the use of images. Whether you’re keeping up to date with your friend’s life through their posts, or by sending them images you find.

Easy to edit

Some people use Instagram purely to edit photos because this app has made this incredibly easy. They have done this through creating a large set of filters one can place on the photo with pre-set settings such as saturation and structure. It also allows one to adjust these edits easily, so it gives one the option to have a template but it is not restrictive.

Easy to navigate

Since this application is made for a large target audience, including fairly young children, this application has been created such that it is really easy to navigate. The layout is also fairly simple and organised, so that it is easy for a wide range of users.

Cons

No longer have rights to photographs

One of the biggest flaws with this application is the terms and conditions one has to agree to in order to create an account. One of the terms and conditions that affects the user most is the rule that once a photograph is submitted on your account you no longer have any legal rights over it. This photo would now belong to Instagram, and they can use the photo as they please. This can be an issue because this is a popular photo sharing application, but people do not necessarily want to give up their rights to a photo.

Addictive

Like most social media Instagram is addictive. For Instagram users this application will most likely become part of their daily routine, checking it at least a few thousand times a day. Whether it is the need to check just to make sure you do not miss anything that has been posted during the day, or the need to constantly post photographs.

Conclusion

Overall I would recommend this application to people who enjoy social media and/or photography (4/5 stars). This is because there are more positive aspects that outweigh the negative parts, however given this, this application is definitely not for everyone. This application would especially would not suit people who are not that fond of social media, and it would not suit people who strongly believe they should retain rights on their photos.
