Why do some athletes become excited before an upcoming competition against close competitors, whilst others don’t look forward to it at all?
This set of resources covers the difference between a challenge and a threat state, and how viewing an upcoming event as a challenge (challenge appraisal) can lead to the challenge state that the athlete needs in order to perform to the best of their abilities. Research recommendations are also provided for how you, as a coach, can develop your athletes’ challenge appraisal.
