Rocky Road to Rock Art….

Tillie joined us today, and we gave her a gentle start by sending her onto the moors with Kimberley to survey a shieling. We were also joined for the day by local historian, Mike Jackson, who has been very generous in sharing his research with us on the Bewcastle area. Today, however, we took him over the work we have done so far to the south of Bewcastle, and we spent the time walking long boundaries, finding shielings and farmsteads and, most particularly, new rock art sites. Tillie discovered one site which we had not seen before, not bad for her first day.

A tired but happy team on the way home after a long but productive day. Well done everyone!

Hi just some information so that a site duplicate can be avoided the second rock found by Tillie on your survey around Gillaleese unfortunately this was discovered before by Brian Kerr c2006 recorded and published on internet site Modern Antiquarian see in Cumbria. It has also been drawn and recorded by us during our survey we have seven stones on our database however the first cup and ring marked rock you have illustrated is new to us do you have a NGR.

      Hi Paul,

Thanks for this. Sometime after the project finished, I did come across the Modern Antiquarian entry for that stone. However, it hasn’t been entered on the Historic Environment Record. Our intention is to provide entries for all the stones recorded during the project to go on the HER sometime this year, so that there is an official public record. I am on fieldwork in Northumberland at the moment, with very limited internet access, but thanks for your information.

      Best wishes
