SAP SLcM – Student Lifecycle Management

The University’s main corporate database is SAP – there are SAP modules for Finance, Purchasing, HR, Estates and Student records. There are also modules for reporting and for CRM.

The part of the system that is used for student records is Student Lifecycle Management. SLcM is the master data source for most aspects of a student record from admission, registration and fee payment through to graduation.

Parts of SLcM are very highly developed – e.g. the functionality for postgraduate admissions involves an applicant portal and sophisticated workflow and document production. SLcM is subject to constant development to reflect statutory changes (e.g. UCAS, HESA or UKBA related) or process refinements requested by the University.

SLcM is often referred to as a ‘back-end’ system as it is used directly by a limited number of users in academic units and services. SLcM is however the main data source for other systems based on SAP.

In particular:

  • staff often access real-time student records via the SIG,
  • staff most often access reports on student records via MyWorkPlace portal,
  • students access their own student record via S3P.

The University has an Institutional Data Feed Service which is used to share data between systems – via this route SLcM data is fed to other systems such as NeSS and BlackBoard. The feeds to other systems (including BW reports in myWorkPlace portal) generally take place overnight.
