Yiota Peratikou

Yiota Peratikou is a Cypriot artist who is currently living in Newcastle. She works with photography, video, sound and sculpture to create atmospheric environments which make viewers feel immersed in her work. She explores her connection with nature and how modern society lost this connection, resulting in pollution and deforestation. In her work Tank Series she created environments using plants and earth pigments, documening their decay. The microorganisms and mold act as nature’s natural recyclers where old becomes new and dead matter is broken down in order to give birth to something new. In addition, her video is being projected onto rubbish she found by the sea side in Akamas, Cyprus. In contrast with natural matter, these debris will take decades to decompose and in the meantime it puts in danger animals and delicate ecosystems. Both ambient and industrial sounds are played creating feelings of calmness and unease.
