Directions

The 2022 ISLE Summer School at Newcastle is currently planned as a hybrid meeting (i.e. you can participate virtually or in-person). The in-person programme is subject to COVID-19 national and international travel, border and quarantine restrictions. Please be aware that, as a result of these (or other factors beyond our control), ISLE may change the format of the Summer School to wholly online at a later date, cancel the full programme, or cancel elements within it. In-person participants should therefore organise their own health, travel and personal insurances in advance. Every effort will be made to update participants as quickly as possible should a change occur. We will closely communicate with those affected and try to find a satisfactory solution for everyone.

The in-person events will be held on-campus at Newcastle University. Our postcode is NE1 7RU if you are using a sat-nav or route planner.

A map of the campus and of the city is provided below for your reference, as well as further mode-specific travel directions.

By train

The nearest national rail station is Newcastle Central Station, just a 15 minute walk to campus. There are regular connections to many major UK cities, including a train from London in just under three hours.

A metro connection can also be found in the train station, which may be used to connect to a closer stop.

By metro

Newcastle University can be found a couple of minutes’ walk away from the Haymarket station on the Tyne and Wear Metro service.

The earliest service is around 05:45 and the latest is around 23:30. A map of the Metro system can be found on the Nexus website here, alongside timetables of the services available here. You may wish to make use of the Nexus Metro application available on mobile devices to keep up to date on the next available service.

By bus

For an economical option, you can reach us by Megabus or National Express, with buses for under £10 from London and Glasgow. Newcastle University is also well-connected by bus to all of the local suburbs.

For more information, visit the Nexus bus website for bus timetables and fares.

By plane

The nearest airport to the University is Newcastle Airport, located approximately seven miles north west of the campus. The airport hosts both domestic and international flights, providing an accessible route for attendees from further afield.

The airport has its own Metro connection to the main network, with a journey time of around 25 minutes to Haymarket station.
