NURL – 60
Liverpool Uni – 12
The Owls new-look first team followed up last weeks win by crushing newly promoted Liverpool 60-12 at Cochrane Park.
It was vital for Newcastle to maintain momentum from their win at Leeds going into their first home fixture, however the opening stages proved anything but convincing. Aggressive Liverpool defence kept the hosts at bay in a hotly contested opening 15 minutes. NURL were in need of inspiration, which came in the form of their industrious second row Dave Knox, who wriggled through a number of tackles before crashing over for the opening try.

Having taken the lead, Newcastle looked to pen the visitors in their own half. Tireless work from NURL prop Daniel “Barbara Streisand” Caparros and Deadlift Dawson broke Liverpool hearts as the hosts absorbed any offensive pressure.
The Owls formidable loose forward Teddy Ward proved the difference between the teams in the latter stages of the first half, with a brace of tries keeping the score board ticking over for the hosts.
Liverpool hit back on the stroke of half time to register a try, however their early spirit was clearly starting to wane.
The Owls started on the attack after the break, with tries from Newcastle centre Jimmy Phillips and winger Harry Baxter pushing NURL into an increasingly comfortable lead.
NURL stand off Chris Griffiths maintained his 100 percent record for the club, cruising over for a Ste Moorecroft-esque try after 60 minutes. However, fellow stand off Jack Wearside was not to be out done, scoring a wonderful solo effort moments later.
Into the final stages and the home advantage began to tell, with a stereotypically bland try from hooker Robse C. Seagreaves and another from Irish maestro Dave Knox giving NURL a comfortable cushion.
Moments before the final whistle, Newcastle full-back James Bird swooped over for a try on his home debut to cement a win for the hosts.
NURL second team continued their sterling start to the season with a win at Hull, which caps off an excellent opening fortnight for the AUs most beloved team. Next week, the death machine rolls into Sheffield as the first team aim to tackle the formidable drongos at the Hallam.
