NURL – 60
Liverpool Uni – 12

The Owls new-look first team followed up last weeks win by crushing newly promoted Liverpool 60-12 at Cochrane Park.

It was vital for Newcastle to maintain momentum from their win at Leeds going into their first home fixture, however the opening stages proved anything but convincing. Aggressive Liverpool defence kept the hosts at bay in a hotly contested opening 15 minutes. NURL were in need of inspiration, which came in the form of their industrious second row Dave Knox, who wriggled through a number of tackles before crashing over for the opening try.

Bradford – 14
NURL – 36

As the gears of the NURL death machine began to grind back into motion, the AUs most beloved sports sports team visited the 1994 european capital of culture: Bradford. The match started at a typically frantic pace, with Joe “deadlift” Dawson bumbling over two tries early in the first quarter to send the crowd into raptures.

To all those freshers (and others) who signed up to NURL at the freshers fayre and are interested enough that you decided to check out our website, some information on the first training session and match is outlined below:

First Training Session – Monday 4th October

Gateshead Stadium – 19:15 to 21:00 (still leaves you enough time to hit the toon after for some cheap trebles and even cheaper “women”)

There is a 18:30 meet outside the union where a few of the senior lads will accompany you on the short journey to make sure you all get there safe and sound. Make sure and bring some change for the metro. For all those who think you are hard and dont need any help, the details of how to to get to Gateshead Stadium are in the training details section of the website. Boots are not essential as we train on 3G surfaces, however they can be worn.

Friendly Match vs Bradford

A friendly has been organised as an away match to Bradford Uni. This is a great chance to really get a taste of rugby league playing beside some of the senior players, something that you might not get from just a training session. EVERYONE WILL GET GAMETIME regardless of experience or ability. After a bit of rough and tumble we will be getting the coach back to Newcastle for a big night out where you will experience the gritty drunken side of NURL that the current members know and love. NO INITIATION for all of you who may have been concerned about that, just plenty of drinking and a guarantee of plenty of women*.

They are all the details to date. Keep checking emails regularly to see if anything changes. Sithee all next Monday 4th October.

*Women are not guaranteed

With a hard-fought victory over Birmingham opposition the indefatigable
NURL 2nd team completed a magnificent and unlikely march to silverware glory.

Tom Burnham receiving the bejewelled salver from Matt Jeffery

The triumph concluded a tumultuous and at times bizarre cup-run that belied the 2nds largely unsuccessful league campaign, indeed, the experiences shared through the tough season seemed to provide the impetus for the Death Machine’s late surge in the BUCS Plate competition.

NURL 2nds – 14
Lancaster – 12

By Jo Robinson

Following on from the previous week’s faultless victory against Bradford, the NURL 2nd were confident of another triumph over little known Lancaster in the Bucs Plate Quarter Finals. This was demonstrated in the opening exchanges with a series of powerful drives from the training shy Aidan Robson, single-handedly taking the Owls deep into Lancaster territory. However, handling errors brought NURL’s advance to an end, a consistent theme that dogged their performance.
