Sociolinguistics; phonetic and phonological variation and change; language, class and industry
I investigate phonetic and phonological variation and change in the accent of Stoke-on-Trent, with particular focus on speakers who work(ed) in its world-famous pottery industry. I am interested in the meaning behind sociolinguistic variation, and so combine quantitative and qualitative methods to examine inter- and intra-speaker variation according to social categories, style and topic. I work on oral history data, and am keen to explore the impact of doing linguistic work on such data, and to connect my research with museums and the general public.
