I am a postgraduate student in Linguistics on North-East & Northern Ireland Doctoral Training Partnership 1+3.5 Studentship. My research project is titled Variation in Phonological Production and Perception in Later Life. Typical ageing results an incredible diversity in the social, physiological, and cognitive functioning of older adults. Yet, the impact of this diversity on language use remains relatively unexplored. My research investigates how ageing-related physiological, auditory, and cognitive changes impact phonological production and perception in later-life. I have a particular interest in how biologically-driven changes in the speech of older adults may index sociolinguistic meaning in the minds of listeners, and how auditory developments in sound perception might motivate changes in sound production.
