The Role

The School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences (ECLS) is seeking to appoint a member of staff at Lecturer/Senior Lecturer level in Phonetics and Phonology. The successful applicant will be part of a diverse and collegiate team of academics, clinicians, researchers and professional support staff delivering high quality teaching and research in Speech and Language Sciences. You will have a strong background in phonetics and phonology and a strong research profile in this area. You will have expertise in practical phonetics (ear training), laboratory-based methodologies and quantitative analysis of phonetic data. You will make a significant contribution to teaching and supervision within the Speech and Language Sciences (SLS) section across both undergraduate and post graduate pre-registration speech and language therapy Health and Care Professions Council approved programmes, as well the IPhD in Phonetics and Phonology. You will carry out high quality research in the area of phonetics and/or laboratory phonology, contribute to the profile and to the research culture of the Phonetics and Phonology Research Group, the School and the relevant research centres and institutes across campus. You will, where appropriate, make a contribution to administration within the School.

Qualifications

Essential:  
PhD in linguistics, speech and language sciences or related discipline, with focus on phonetics and phonology

Desirable:
Recognised HE teaching qualification

The Role

The School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences (ECLS) seeks you for the position of Research Assistant (Laboratory Manager). You will support the research of academic staff and students in experimental and laboratory projects which take place in the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences and across the faculty. This includes support for one of more of the following co-located labs:

  1. A psycholinguistics lab with an eyetracker and a range of software programs for behavioural experiments and audio-visual transcription and editing facilities (e.g. EyeLink, Eprime, Labvanced, Gorilla, Adobe Editing Suite, ELAN, PRAAT etc.)
  2. A phonetics lab with:
    • audio-visual recording facilities, including an anechoic chamber, edirol recorders for high quality auditory recordings for acoustic analysis and camcorders for video recordings.
    • articulatory recording facilities, including ultrasound tongue imaging, electropalatography, electro-glottography, and nasometry.

The Role

You will have a completed PhD in Linguistics or English Language, and have experience in teaching the phonetics and phonology of English and other languages at undergraduate level. Proficiency in the collection, analysis and handling of empirical language data in English and other languages is essential. Also essential is the ability to teach and research in one or more of these additional strengths of the Language and Linguistics subject group: language acquisition and evolution, language and cognition, language variation and change, syntax. You will have an excellent publication record for your career stage. You should also be able to demonstrate clear potential for making a significant contribution to the School’s and Faculty’s collaborative teaching and research culture, which includes a capacity for academic and societal impacts.

The Department

The School of English Literature, Language & Linguistics (SELLL) currently has 64 members of academic staff (55FT and 9PT) working across the fields of English Language, Linguistics, English Literature and Creative Writing. 13 Research Associates and Fellows work alongside these staff. Together with our 750 undergraduates and over 200 postgraduates (registered on both taught and research programmes), we form a thriving, highly motivated intellectual community, dedicated to excellence and innovation in teaching and research. Over 80% of our research was deemed ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, and our teaching was rated as ‘excellent’ in the last QAA audit.

The Language and Linguistics subject group in SELLL has particular research and teaching strengths in: linguistic theory; language acquisition, evolution and development; language and cognition; and language variation and change. Funded projects over the past few years have addressed issues across these sub-disciplines, including topical research on language, migration and identity and work on language learning by immigrant adults. Considerable funding has been attracted for research into and the development of a ‘big data’ corpus of North Eastern English. Funding has been won too for research in language and cognition as well as in formal linguistics, most recently through a project with colleagues at Cambridge on novel approaches to parametric variation in syntax. In addition to the wide range of undergraduate teaching and learning offered by the Language and Linguistics subject group in SELLL, the group also lead the MA in Linguistics and IPhD in English Language and Linguistics. We have had considerable success too in supporting PGR student research via the UKRI funded doctoral training partnerships known as ‘Northern Bridge’ and ‘NINE’. Newcastle University also has a very active Phonetics and Phonology research group, and a very well-resourced Linguistics Laboratory supporting experimental and quantitative linguistics research.

Job Alert: Research Associate for Project on Tyneside English

Dr Sophie Meekings is looking for a Research Associate to work with her for five months.

Role

The School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics wishes to appoint a Research Associate in Linguistics. You will be responsible for the project management and completion of an experiment on the sociolinguistics of speech production in noise with Tyneside English speakers. With support from the project PIs and mentors, you will be responsible for recruiting participants, collecting and analysing data, and may also be involved with the writing up of the findings for publication. While experience in data analysis and experimental linguistics is highly desirable, some training can be provided in these areas.

You will have proven experience in collecting experimental data. Experience in recruiting adult research participants in Newcastle and the wider Tyneside area, and/or strong social ties to the Newcastle and Tyneside area are highly desirable.  Previous experience in behavioural experiments, and some linguistics background is essential. Experience conducting auditory analysis of linguistic variables (e.g., using Praat) is desirable.

This is a full-time, fixed term post available for the duration of five months.

Key Accountabilities

  • Piloting: Test and troubleshoot existing experimental software in preparation for data collection, including becoming familiar with best use of phonology lab recording equipment, and running pilot studies to test experimental pipeline and develop recruitment strategies.
  • Recruitment: Recruit 30-50 native Newcastle/Tyneside speakers.
  • Testing. Collect data from recruited participants  (including collecting consent forms, participant briefing/debriefing and subject supervision during participation)
  • Analysis: In collaboration with other members of the research team, you will be expected to transcribe recordings, hand-code phonetic variables, and analyse data in R.

Salary

£30,942.00 – £40,323.00

Postdoc Position at University of Lisbon

Postdoc position in experimental research on language development

Applications are invited for a full-time postdoctoral position in the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon.

The postdoctoral fellow will work in the Phonetics and Phonology lab and the Lisbon Baby Lab (http://labfon.letras.ulisboa.pt/babylab/ ) with Prof. Sonia Frota and her team on projects relating to early language development in typical, at-risk, and impaired populations. Primary duties include active engagement in the projects and the lab’s research, including knowledge transfer and training and knowledge dissemination, designing and conducting experiments, preparing findings for publication and oral presentation, laboratory management, and working with graduate and undergraduate students. Salary will be in accordance with the Portuguese Science Foundation salary scale, specifically €1495 per month (net) (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores), plus supplemental insurances. Financial support for travelling/settling is provided for researchers from outside Portugal (in the amount of €1000). The post is available for 10 months, eventually renewed until the end of the project should it be extended. The successful candidate is expected to start January 1, 2019.

The Phonetics and Phonology lab and the Lisbon Baby Lab are part of the Center of Linguistics of the University of Lisbon. The lab’s facilities include SMI RED500 and SR Research EyeLink 1000 eye trackers and a Neuroscan 64 channel EEG with the Quik cap system. The lab works with a network of collaborating partners within and outside academia (e.g., Psychology School, Medical School, hospitals, private associations, nurseries). The postdoctoral fellow will also benefit from and participate in the Annual Summer Training in Experimental Methods organised by the lab (http://labfon.letras.ulisboa.pt/summerschool/2018/en/ ).

Qualifications:

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in a relevant field, such as neurolinguistics, language acquisition, psychology, or cognitive neuroscience, and previous experience in experimental research in language perception and language processing. Good knowledge of at least some of the experimental paradigms used with EEG/ERP and/or Eye-tracking and their implementation, as well as of data extraction routines and analysis, is required. Previous experience in infant speech perception research or research with clinical populations is desirable. A background in statistics, applied mathematics, or programming skills will be a plus. Proficiency in English is required. Knowledge of Portuguese or of other Romance language (e.g., Catalan, Spanish, Italian, French) is an advantage.
