Tom McAllister

Tom is currently a Royal Society University Research Fellow in the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences at Newcastle University.

Background

Tom completed his BSc at the University of Leeds in 2008 and a PhD in 2012 with Mike Webb investigating the protein post-translational modification phosphophistidine.
He then spent time as a PDRA, still in Leeds, with Bruce Turnbull engineering protein nanostructures through carbohydrate-protein interactions and a stint as a Teaching Fellow at the University of York, before moving to the University of Oxford in 2014 for a PDRA with Akane Kawamura developing an mRNA-display cyclic peptide discovery platform.

He relocated to Newcastle University in 2019 and began his independent career in 2022 following the award of a Royal Society University Research Fellowship.

Research in the group focusses on better understanding of the control of protein glycosylation; fundamental to many biological processes and often misregulated in disease.
