Joint Research Seminar with GPI Durham and ConGov: Dr Murilo Gaspardo, ‘Between malaise and autocratization: the global dimension of the crises of democracy’ (15th Nov 3-4pm)
The Global Policy Institute (GPI) at Durham University and the Constitutionalism and Governance Group at Newcastle University are excited to welcome Dr Murilo Gaspardo from the School of Human and Social Sciences of São Paulo State University (UNESP) to host a talk on ‘Between malaise and autocratization: the global dimension of the crises of democracy’.
The talk is taking place on Wednesday 15 November from 15.00 – 16.00 in person in PCL50 (Durham Law School), Durham University and online via zoom. Zoom details are available on request (email Ruth.Houghton@newcastle.ac.uk)
Abstract
Is Brazilian democracy in crisis? What are its causes and explanations? What is the legal
institutional dimension of this crisis? What are the global patterns and what is specific in the Brazilian case? Starting from these questions which guide the research project “Crisis of democracy and legal institutional arrangements”, in this seminar we will discuss: (1) the conceptual distinctions between: (a) expected performance of democracy, (b) populism, (c) autocratization, (d) malaise and (e) crisis of democracy; (2) the global explanatory dimensions of the crises of democracy: (a) the challenges posed to democracy by globalization and interdependence; (b) the feedback between impasses in global governance, the rise of populist and nationalist leaders and the crises of national democratic regimes; (c) the global economic and geopolitical reconfiguration in the face of the influence of autocratic states; (d) the global neoconservative movement and the international articulation between authoritarian movements; and, finally, (3) the illustrative cases of Brazil (autocratization) and the UK (malaise) two countries with very different histories, levels of development and institutional organizations which present common patterns on the crisis of democracy.
Looking forward to seeing many of you there!
