February 25th Sustentável pra quem? Sustainable for whom?
Online Event: YouTube live broadcast
Sustentável pra quem?” is an online workshop aiming to present and discuss the Brazilian results of an international research on what does influence sustainable food consumption in the middle classes of the global south. Financed by the UK research council (ESRC), the research was carried out simultaneously in Brazil, South Africa and China. In Brazil, the research was implemented by UFRJ between 2018-2019, with 61 in-depth interviews of key informants from the sustainable food national landscape (Phase 1) and middle class consumers in Rio de Janeiro (Phase 2).
The research main results invite us to rethink what is the meaning of sustainable food in the brazilian context. While the first phase of the project presented the Brazilian institutional view of sustainable food consumption strongly influenced by the guidelines proposed in the Food Guide for the Brazilian Population (2014), the second phase required a broader and critical view in order to not frame the eating practices of middle classes in Brazil as ‘unsustainable’. Thus, the question-title of the event appears as a provocation resulting from the research results: Sustainable for whom?
