Abstract
Is Brazilian democracy in crisis? What are its causes and explanations? What is the legal
institutional dimension of this crisis? What are the global patterns and what is specific in the Brazilian case? Starting from these questions which guide the research project “Crisis of democracy and legal institutional arrangements”, in this seminar we will discuss: (1) the conceptual distinctions between: (a) expected performance of democracy, (b) populism, (c) autocratization, (d) malaise and (e) crisis of democracy; (2) the global explanatory dimensions of the crises of democracy: (a) the challenges posed to democracy by globalization and interdependence; (b) the feedback between impasses in global governance, the rise of populist and nationalist leaders and the crises of national democratic regimes; (c) the global economic and geopolitical reconfiguration in the face of the influence of autocratic states; (d) the global neoconservative movement and the international articulation between authoritarian movements; and, finally, (3) the illustrative cases of Brazil (autocratization) and the UK (malaise) two countries with very different histories, levels of development and institutional organizations which present common patterns on the crisis of democracy.
Looking forward to seeing many of you there!
