Bartlett Funding Opportunities

Fine Art students can apply to two small pots of Department funding:

1. Bartlett Sustainable Practice Award 2024

NEW/Extended Deadline

The aim of the Bartlett Sustainable Practice Award is to inspire students to explore practice-led approaches to climate conscious and sustainable making.  There will be prizes available of up to £200 each which will be awarded through open submission to UG and MFA Fine Art students for practices that reflect critically on ideas in relation to sustainable making.

The aim of the project is also to address the climate emergency as a key challenge through production, presentation and discursive framing of contemporary art practices. The Fine Art department works towards best practice principles in climate aware arts education in line with Newcastle University’s Vision Statement (LINK),  that recognises  environmental sustainability as a strategic goal.

Venice Fellowship Programme

Do you want to be part of the British Pavilion at the next Venice Biennale in 2024? There is a fantastic opportunity for two FULLY FUNDED month long student fellowships open to ALL Newcastle University Fine Art students. Two students will be selected from our Fine Art department to work with student colleagues from other Fine Art departments across the UK.
The deadline for applications is 8th November2023.  Late applications cannot be accepted. Please read the attached material, and if you can attend a British Council webinar. You can also contact Andrew Burton for more info.

What is the Venice Fellowship Programme?
The British Council is excited to welcome applications for its Venice Fellowships Programme to take place during the 60th International Art Exhibition la Biennale de Venezia in 2024 (the Venice Art Biennale). The Venice Fellowships Programme is a unique opportunity for creative individuals, students, researchers, artists at the start of their careers, to spend a month in Venice during one of the world’s most important art biennales. Successful applicants will spend one month in Venice to develop a proposed project and will also gain work experience acting as an exhibition ambassador for John Akomfrah’s exhibition at the British Pavilion. Fellows will have the opportunity to engage with an international community of artists, researchers, art entrepreneurs, young leaders and change makers, and also contribute with a proposed project. The fellowship month can be taken between April and November 2024 with the dates decided by the British Council.

Who can apply?
The British Council welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, areas of knowledge, academic departments and life experiences. We are looking for creative individuals, interested and passionate about arts, culture, and its social value, and how the arts can contribute to the world and address society’s most complex challenges.

How do I apply?
To apply for a position please send an application form – which you can find in the attached document  – and an equality and diversity monitoring form (for the British Council’s records) to Andrew Burton  on or before 8th November 2023 (23:59 GMT). Your application will be reviewed by a panel of Fine Art staff. We will then send a shortlist of 5 candidates to the British Council for the final review stage.

You will see on the application form that the British Council are supporting two application formats: this could be answering the questions in a written format or as a video with image and audio. It does not need to be slickly produced; it is intended to give them a sense of what you’re interested in and why the Fellowship appeals to you. The British Council use different ways of application as they appreciate that not everyone would prefer to write, but similarly, not everyone likes to speak in front of a camera, so they are welcoming both methods. Candidates are encouraged to apply with the one they feel most comfortable with.

How can I find out more about the Fellowship Programme and what’s expected?
Please read the attached document, and follow the links it contains.

 Any other questions?
If you have any questions about the programme or the application process, please contact Andrew Burton  via email .

In case you couldn’t get into the open meeting on 4th October, you can find the recording here:

The recording (video, audio, text)

Please feel free to post this on your Fellowship call-out pages (if you have one), They  also encourage your students/ community members to scroll to the end of the recording to hear what other questions are being asked by fellow applicants.

The chat text (saved in the folder) includes many questions, all of which we answered verbally or in the chat.

In addition, we shared with them:

– The Application form

– The Applicants’ Guidance document

– Slides from today’s’ presentation

– The Fair Pay and Lived Experience UK Benefits resourcewith gratitude to and produced by Arts&Homelessness International.

These latter two documents were shared today in response to several questions about benefits and grants; a conversation I will pick up separately with 2024 Partners – including AHI, Outside In, Venture Arts and others – possibly as part of the Partners’ Community of Practice.
