Dr Sam Buchan-Watts, Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in Art Writing

Wordsworth once declared that ‘poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings’, a phrase often used to suggest the uniquely personal and passionate status of poetry as an art form. ‘We’re chanting “Oi, Tate, we’ve got a vendetta, where the fuck is Ana Mendieta?” We really mean it. We are vengeful and burning with rage’ — Liv Wynter, 2016

This talk asks what happens when we cite, centre and practice agential forms such as protest, programming and reportage as art writing ‘that really mean[s] it’? What kind of accountability to the communities and practitioners outside institutions does that call us to?

Industrial Strike Action

I hope you are keeping well and having an enjoyable Semester 2. I am getting in touch to follow up on a previous message to you concerning Industrial Action. Fine Art Breakfast Club

Every Wednesday 9-10 AM, Art Cafe, in person. This is an opportunity to speak to the head or deputy head of department. Everybody welcome!

What is Breakfast Club?

Hosted by the Head of Fine and Deputy Head (Christian & Nick), Breakfast Club is an informal space for conversation, and community. You can pop in for a coffee and chat about anything that comes to mind. We can listen, answer questions you might have and resolve concerns or just chat about whatever is the hot topic that week. Breakfast Club continues every Wednesday 9-10am in the FA Cafe.

Everyone welcome. 🙂

Fine Art Antiracism Forum speaker series announced

The Fine Art Antiracism Forum formed in October 2020 to discuss ways we in the department can work together towards anti-racism goals and enhance racial literacy amongst staff and students.

As part of this ongoing work, we’re excited to announce a series of talks and seminars which focus on student experience and approaches to teaching and art practice that provide alternatives to contemporary art cultures that privilege whiteness and are founded on racist traditions.

OPEN STUDIOS 2021

OPEN STUDIOS is a great opportunity for our Fine Art community to come together and share some of the incredible work taking place in the department.
If you have not been involved before this is when we tidy up ALL of the studios (UG and MFA) and you present work in progress in your studio space. This year it also coincides with the second week of the Year 4 Interim shows that take place in the all bookable spaces – so lots of exciting stuff happening everywhere in the building.
